It's hard to beat the Kalmbach brand from a quality and cost standpoint.
My wife and I were feeding our chickens crumble feed from a commercial chicken grower in our area but the last batch had bugs in it. The chickens didn't mind the bugs but my wife did. We found Kalmbach Henhouse reserve, 17% protein layer feed, at our local Walmart and we are making the switch. It does kind of resemble scratch because it appears to have whole grains, pellets and seeds. In fact, we are feeding the Kalmbach to them as scratch until the old feed is all used up to get them used to it. They seem to really like it.

I make my own feed with a recipe of red wheat, barley, alfalfa, millet, sunflower seeds, kelp, nutritional yeast, rye, soybean meal, flax, oats, split peas, lentils. It's 19% protein the way I mix it. I do put in 4 cups of Nature wise pellets too.
