Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

And some more from the last week or two...We have 6 hens with chicks from 1 to 5 weeks or so running around, 2 hens sitting on eggs and a 3rd and 4th acting like they are wanting to sit...when it rains it pours!

it can take awhile for them to actually lay...even though she is teasing you.;)
Thelma is squatting too, not holding my breath. It will happen when it happens. Louise is the same age, she is not doing as much as Thelma and she a a bit smaller.
I am going to be doing "hen checks" tomorrow..making sure everyone is all good-all over. Will take the time to check out duo's leg-spacing(pelvic area)..that sometimes helps you figure out how close they are to laying, vent size & overall condition.
It is hard to be patient when the 'play' with you like that...hang in there!!

No eggs today... she's such a tease! She'll be 22 weeks on Sunday, my redheads will be 18 weeks tomorrow. Ginger's face and wattles have been reddening up for a few weeks now, Pepper is still fairly pinkish. But they're both still narrow looking in the pelvis. I'll just have to be more patient!

cleaning the coop out this morning, always have "helpers". ..the bar.rocks are gad to oblige..
Don't know if this is a sign of laying being around the corner, but they were BOTH eating very intently from the shell-cup (calcium).
Fingers crossed it won't be too long:fl ....they are 15 weeks today.

:fl

A few baby photos to share...

Was a great morning here also, unfortunately I was just getting home from work at 0745, so not my preferred way to enjoy the morning.
Broodies are busy escorting their chicks all over and Jeckle even brought hers into the mud room to beg for treats!
learnin her kids well!!
It has since warmed up considerably. Don't well with heat, so the AC is back on. Even Bug has issues with being hot.
I absolutely LOVE the pics..omgosh...

.
Bug & I had an awesome morning, we made TURTLE BROWNIES!!!
droolin.gif

Must have wore her out, went in n for a nap early, all that baking & playing, even had some yard time before it got too hot. Helped me pick tomatoes to dehydrate..yum!
Have a napkin ready, cause you'll be drooling..
before baking, we used pecans this time instead of walnuts.

she mixed, did the 'criss-cross' and sprinkled the nuts.

telling me she will be the 'first' to do the taste testing...
after only a half hour cooling she said, " grandma, can I please have one brownie cause I have been waiting for 100 minutes"...
lau.gif
...
Of course she got one & it was still warm.
After baking, top got just a tad darker than normal, but wowsers....so good. I got to lick the knife.

Thank you, Your little GD is adorable! And the brownies look awesome!:drool I hope you know how many special memories you are gifting that little girl....I was lucky enough to grow up with my grandma just a quick walk away...I can't tell you how many hours and days I spent at her place cooking and gardening and helping with chores but I can tell you that to this day those memories are precious to me. As for the birds....I guess the hens are happy and secure feeling because they do love raising little ones. We had a handful of mutts to start with, and have a pure Black Australorp rooster in charge of the eggers coop, we also now have a few Buckeye hens, some white rock hens and roosters, the Silver pencil rocks, a couple of Barred rock hens, 2 black jersey giant hens and a bunch of Light Sussex. I can say that the only breed which hasn't had a broody hen is the barred rocks. We have raised a bunch of barnyard mixes and almost all of them have gone broody by the time they are a year and most brood at least once a year, we have a couple who are reliable for a spring and fall hatch and then we have a few (mostly the silkie mixes and silver pencils) who brood 3 or 4 times a year. Lacey, my favorite SPR hen is currently setting on clutch #4 for the year. I don't know if we just hit a genetic jackpot as far as broody genes, or if it is the coop set ups or if it is that all of our birds have been broody raised themselves....but the flock is broody crazy for sure!

Oh man I am like a total chicken stalker now... I just went out to check on the girls and Tiny squatted for me yet again, and I got a good look at her vent. It's looking quite wide and ready!

Thank you, I am just a bit smitten with her, nothing serious

, hahaha. My gram(s) was an enormous part of my life also. I really do miss them. So much knowledge, now I am old enough to appreciate it more.
Ahhh, the truth of life eh?

wow, you do have quite the smorgasbord of birds!
clutch #4..omgosh..hhaha, busy girl!
Very cool you have the set-up that you do. Space is a true commodity! & township ordinances

..
Did the hen checks...the older girls did not appreciate it very much..hahaha...
the two new (barred rock) girls are still pretty narrow in the pelvis. I believe they are just working out the finer points of becoming a layer..idk

, when an egg is found, that i am not familiar with, then the game is on.
The big girls are good, beside a dirty butt...those wyandottes have such a poofy back end. Attila is the one, most of the time, that would have an issue. She is so large and her feathering-puff back there just covers everything. hahaha, so guess what I get to do later ....hahaha, oh joy!
