Roosters and shavings

Will my rhode island rooster fertilize my silkies eggs...and is it ok if my chickens eat their shavings...also do u need a certain type of shavings?

Your RIR rooster may try to mate your silkies, but may injure them in the process. Chickens generally do not eat shavings as they have no nutritional value. White pine shavings contain less volatile organic components than cedar shavings. Many prefer hardwood shavings, but they may be more difficult to come by.
