I am concerned with egg production. What 2 birds should I cross for a high production red sexlink chicken?

For my Red Sex-Links, I crossed a Rhode Island Red male with Rhode Island White female. When the other birds aren't laying well like now with their yearly molt, my Rhode Island Whites are my best layers along with my Leghorns.

Depends. Without the black down, it can be more difficult to see the head spot. As they feather in, the males should develop clear barring.

Yes, as long as the roo is extended black. Examples of that are Black Copper Marans, Black Ameraucana (to make olive eggers), etc. Really, almost any black roo would do.
