I love the name! I only name a few of my chickens because I have so many that I would never remember all of them.

I have a hard enough time remembering all my grand kids names nonetheless my chickens.

I would love to see pictures of your Pita Pinta chickens. I will have to look them up on the internes as I have not heard of them before.
I need to take some new ones. The girls are now laying and they are so beautiful with their red combs. Here are some pics from a while ago.

Over 30 pages behind, will have to read the daily recaps.

You know, even I have to admit I have an egg problem when I make a batch of dog treats and say to myself, "It only uses 30 eggs? Need to double batch that to use them up..."

I guess I better start looking into how to make dog/cat food too. Otherwise my dogs will be very well trained and very, very fat.

WOW interesting and thank you!!! I would love to care for something that lives longer and doesnt fly the coop at age 18 or die at age 10-14 :(
I think you are correct, not a good idea, as my dogs killed a chicken last night not smart to have anythng inside with them, at least outside they have a flighty chance :(
It wasn't a perfect facility and run on a shoestring budget. No one was paid, even the biologists. It was started by a private couple but it was heavily regulated by the Costa Rican government's conservation department. A biologist had to be on the property 24/7.
The flight cages weren't nearly big enough. Ideally, cages and pens should be set up so the young birds that would eventually be released into the wild should never see the human feeding them. The biologists I worked with made up the diet from whatever was available at the local market. We would buy fruits and vegetables that were overripe so we could get them cheaply. There was a lot of waste and we would compost a lot of trimmings though. There was also a huge garden to grow produce for the birds.

ChickenCanoe, thanks for the link

I could look at those Macaw pictures all day long.

I wish I was there now - and forever. The noise from those breeding pens was deafening though. To make matters worse, one of the managers was a dog hoarder. There must have been at least 30 dogs barking and several hundred macaws screaming. The idea was for the dogs to keep thieves at bay. Apparently, feeding the dogs was cheaper than hiring guards. In the past, one of the guards had allowed poachers to come in and steal birds and eggs. The place was like Fort Knox. I got a key though, after the first couple days when they thought they could trust me. It was walking distance to where I lived, which was walking distance (albeit longer) to town, the main airport and more importantly, the casino.
In college I used to let mine explore and build a nest in boxes in the top of my closet. I used to have 2 they were sisters. The one died about 5 years ago when I left them in boarding at a vets office to go on vacation for 1 week. These things are like half termite. They love to chew destroy and nest. Especially books cardboard and paper. There aren't too many ways to meet all their destructive and entertainment needs in a clean house. We do our best! If you know what it's like running a daycare then you have an idea of the chaos factor. Unless you just leave them in a cage all the time
sad.png

My friend that does the rescue has never had a clean house because of all the cage birds and poultry.
I could too!!!
You can go there, they always need help.

I can't believe it my tom was killed yesterday and i prayed that my hen would start laying so i could have a chance to get some fertile eggs. I just went out to her pen and there was an egg laying on the ground!!! Now i just pray that it is fertile.

Did I mention I LOVE my Cabinet cooler incubator and the reg coolerbators!!!
I DO I DO I DO!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!

Moved some chicks to the brooder, ALL are BS FAVS so far and one CCL male it
They were filling up the coolerbator and I think we have about 15 more or so to go!
so they can breath now ha ha ha
all eggs have pipped or hatch except three, one brahma and two CCL are not pipped : (
I cannot complain, thats alot of chicks!

and of course pit stop at the counter top! Photo shoot! @Gardeningmama just for you!
