My SS has white chest, too. Some has speckled all over but some are just chest...
One SS I have has darker than others. no speckled on the back at all. only chest and legs...

I just got 3 chicks on Wednesday that I thought were Speckled Sussex but the hatchery said they could be speckled sussex, welsummers or russian orloffs. What do you think?

Chick #1 - 2 days old

1 new coop is done, the Red Barn is on the other end of the property(all fenced for the chickens), along with my brooder shed. Everybody is sharing the coops and barn now! I took these pics last night before doing chores. In the process of adding some more 8x8 coops with runs.

im looking to hatch some speckled sussex eggs... will be ready in about one week from now... does anyone that follows this thread sell hatching eggs? please let me know thanks

I have 2 speckled sussex pullets - supposedly. They are 3 - 4 months old.

One of them makes a hiccup sound. What is up with the noise?

1.) IT started about a month ago.
2.) Could it be a roo learning to crow ? ? ?
3.) Is there a disease that makes a chicken make a hiccup sound? ?
4.) Is this quirk normal to the speckled sussex breed ?

I haven't seen any other signs of illness and none of the other birds have started making the noise. These two chicks have always been talkative, but the hiccup noise is a relatively new developement.

ANY IDEAS ? ? ? ?

Sorry, my SS are about same age but don't have that hiccup sound so don't know about that. Sometime they open mouth wide and act like "throw up" something but no sounds and nothing comes out, too.

My daughter described the hiccup sound as a "Dog Barking" sound . . . .
Any ideas out there in BYC land ? ?

Is this normal for some speckled sussex or should I be worried ? ? ? ?

Ours will hiccup/squeak when they have gapeworm. A couple drops of Ivermectin on the neck skin and parasites are gone! They get gapeworm from eating earthworms and slugs. Hasn't been much of a problem this year with the ground so dry.
