The Trap Nesting Thread

Cold front???
Where do you live?
It was 92 degrees here in 87008 and we thought we were cooking.

Around here, anything under 90 degrees is a cold front from now till around November :gig

I'm not trap nesting right now because of all the broodies I've had. Orpingtons sure do like to go broody! I had over half my layers broody at the same time. So far I've managed to break most of them but I'm just letting the poorest layer set. She's only got plastic eggs in there and the others just go in and lay on top of her :lau They're a sight to see.

Soon as it all settles back down the doors are getting set and we'll be back to it. But I can pretty much tell which hen laid which egg anyway for now. There's a few I'm not sure about but generally I could probably be charting them even w/out the traps.

My project is on hold. There was an article about me in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch which alerted my mayor to the fact that people in my city have chickens and they gave me till July 2 to remove them.
I'm trying to mobilize all the chicken owners to go to the city council meeting tomorrow.
They claim that I have a poultry farm. My biggest flock is 8 birds.

I have 5 broodies now. 2 in one coop and 3 in another.
A black penedesenca went broody just over a week ago and within 3 days 3 more decided to join but after a day or so one of them gave up.

I can't believe that the newspaper that reported on your chickens won't do an article about what's going on now! Have you told them?

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch did do a follow up article the morning after we packed city hall. None of my neighbors had a problem. In fact some came and spoke in my defense. The mayor started all of this because of the first article.

Here are links to recent TV news coverage, in case anyone missed them, and links to the original stories that sparked the issue...

The problems started with the following newspaper article

Then the citation came and we descended on city hall en masse

check out the comments in all the stories. Every single one is supportive of me and negative to the city and mayor.

So I'm not sure what the future of my Black Penedesenca flocks and breeding program holds.
I'll keep you updated.

Have you started a petition to have the city council approve backyard flocks?
Of course they will most likely not approve roosters, so think about verbiage requiring a yard to be a certain size for roosters or so many feet from a house.
How large is your lot, the pictures show you walking in what looks like a large area.

glad to hear that everything went smooth for you.As far as I'm concerned, Trapnesting is a part of "Historical America", cites so call protect historical landmarks and buildings but not the historical lifestyle that todays people try to keep alive.Backyard flocks fed America through The Great Depression and onward.

If i were you i would double the size of my flock now.

pay the neighbors off with eggs, and continue to try your best with the breed you have.

may god bless you for your endeavors

I'm working on the petition.
The neighbors have already gone to the city council meeting and claimed they can't hear the roosters.
I'm on just under an acre. One side of me is a 4 acre field. Behind me is over 20 acres of forest. The other side is a family on 3 acres who are the ones that said they didn't know I had chickens until I told them.
Over the hill across the field is a lady on over 20 acres who told me she only hears them when she's outside and she loves hearing them because it reminds her of her childhood. She was also planning on getting chickens. She has 2 barns.

well, to update, i ended up going another direction... for now at least. instead of trap nesting i'm just using smallish breeding pens for a pair or trio at a time. i ended up with more varieties than i'd planned.

so the free rangers will deposit eggs if/when/where they choose and those in pens i know who's laying or not.

but i'm not working on increasing egg production or size or anything like that for now. the free rangers give me more than enough eating eggs, and the pens all get hatched or sold for hatching.
