When to worm??

Quote:
So worms do cause bloody runny poop? Is there a way to tell if it's worms or if it is cocci? I am still confused about this.

Heat can cause runny poop as well...
So right now if you see it dont automatically think worms.

Ive also heard garlic, garlic powder, and cyenne pepper

Not everyone believes in worming, but this is what I was told to do as a preventative measure:

Worm when 6 months old, then every 6 months after a that, in the spring after the thaw and in the fall after the hard freeze. If you have a very wet summer, you should worm in mid-summer as well. A full clean-out of the coop should be done at this time as well. Sunlight kills the eggs. Note: Earthworms are carriers of roundworms.

To worm:
1. Take chickens off water starting the evening before you plan to worm.
2. Mix Piperazine 17 (aka Wazine 17) 1 oz per gallon of water. Give to chickens (NOT for baby chicks.)
Other wormers (if you can't find either of the above): Amprolium, Panacur
3. The next day, give them regular water.
4. Repeat worming in 14-21 days.
5. Do not use the eggs for 5-7 days after worming.

I have also read that raw pumpkin, or coal dust are natural dewormers.

There are a lot of differing opinions on worming. Natural wormers do / don't work, worm them four times / two times / one time a year, never worm them unless you get a positive fecal from a vet, a negative fecal does not mean there are no worms, they do / do not tolerate a small load of worms if they are healthy, if you don't worm them, the worms can eat more feed than the chickens do, and so forth -- you name it, it's probably been said. No doubt a heavy load of worms has at times killed a chicken. Read up and choose your course of action.

For myself, I follow Dawg53's guidelines. Here are the sources I like:

I have used Ivomec Eprinex to control lice/mites as well as worms. Mine will get a dose of Valbazen in a day or two.

OK!! thanks for the replies! I appreciate it!

Yes. Excellent info. Thanks so much. I love this forum. I've read about 20 or more books on caring for chickens but I still feel completely lost sometimes.
