Preparation:
If you already have an existing flock your new girls will need to quarantine out of reach of them for about 2 weeks. The next step, is to move your feathery friends within sight and sound the flock so have somewhere ready. They will stay there about a month. It is good for them to have nutritional layers mash as it is like they food they are used to. As well as that they may have weak legs so drinkers must be low enough for them to reach easily.

Rescue organization:
BHWT (British hen welfare trust)
Fresh start for hens
Omlet
Battery Cage Hen Rescue USA
Animal place

Once received:
Your birds have probably had a long day let them rest and grow accustomed to their coop. The next day, after their amazing nights sleep you can start enjoying their loving company. They are happy and lively and lucky to be spending the rest of their life with you.

Introduction to the flock
At first this can tricky but I suggest taking the newbies into the coop at night as there is less chance of bickering and they will wake up together. In the beginning they will squabble as they re-establish the pecking order and then will most likely settle down.

Tips:
  • Your retirees will be short of feathers but they will grow back if well looked after.
  • Their legs will be weak so take care to place them on the ground.
  • The ladies may have pale droopy combs but soon they will regain their colour and structure.
  • If you treat them right they will follow you and eat out of your hands.

  • When you first get them they may not perch so give them some encouragement.

  • Eggs may look strange because of bad nutrition but they are retired so they deserve to relax. They have to adjust so they will have an unusual laying pattern until they are settled.

  • Lastly, love them unconditionally and they will be grateful. Rescuing is a brilliant thing to do and incredibly rewarding!
