Adventures on the Ranch: Short Sories and more Edition
A Feathery Christmas Indeed
While doing the evening checks for the babies Christmas, we got to tell the new babies about Santa and his love for birds!
Twas the night before Christmas and all through the hen house
not a creature was stirring, not even a mou.... (loud crash as food bins topple)
Dang it, Gemma!
C'mon baby, you are up late, and you know what tonight is, you need your rest.
She circles and circles and jumps and pecks, demanding to know why her tummy isn't full yet.
Calm down girl it’s only going to be 8 hrs. until breakfast., you're not going to starve.
Her squawk summoned Ozzy, the man of this pen to take charge.
With my rooster stick in hand I threatened him to very closely meet the ground.
He strutted past me without another glance after I told him I'd pass his body around.
Nugget started flapping, getting ready for flight,
While Billy Jo, Bobby Sue and Harley geared up for another girl fight.
Sabrina was singing carols and Lydia stole the show.
When Sabrina lashed out. Olive quickly said No.
Pimento was all alone, she seemed to be lost in her thoughts.
I called out to her and told her that I loved her lots.
Calmness quickly resumed once Gemma knew she'd have food.
Onto the Regulator coop to deal with that crew.
As I said goodnight to my OG babies and sang them their lullaby
I whispered, "Be good babies, Santa's coming tonight."
As I approached the Regulators, I called them lovingly and low.
You see these big babies are sweet and kind but when it comes to the dark, they say no.
Bruce chortles in his usual way to me to confirm they are safe.
Aliyah doesn't trust him so she will scream in my face.
Chili and Spin are already settled in and almost fast asleep.
Until Mary J shoves them out of the way so she can get her seat.
Left-eye and T-boz coo themselves to sleep.
I say goodnight and give them a few peeps.
Snuggle in my loves, tonight's a big night.
Santa has officially taken flight.
I can hear the bantam babies calling from the Remix pen waiting for lights out and tuck in.
Nitro patrols the coop door like a general from a war we've never been in.
Malibu and Blaze take their posts as backup outside of the coop.
Twizzle goes to roost, hoping to hit Blaze with fresh poop.
Sweethearts Mickey and Mallory head in after tiny little pecks
and coos.
I start my count, wait who am I missing? Where are Chip and Lace? Surely, I didn't lose 2.
I yell for them, they finally appear, I sigh with relief, they don't care.
I say c’mon girls, we got to be fast, Santa will be here in a snap.
A few little bawks and everyone says goodnight.
The murmurs die down and they are out like a light.
Hold on Santa I say, I need a little more time.
There’re 10 pens altogether, 7 left to shut in tight.
Voldemort and Bellatrix snuggle in Skeweswart together nicely and close. A perfect pair.
Love at first sight and hopefully babies coming soon, no other cares.
Voldemort loves his Bella more than food.
She looks at him like he hung the moon.
I talk soft and sweet as to not initiate an air raid stream of Voldys crow.
He's diligent at his alarm calls, all day, every day All night. Forever, in a row.
Until his throat is sore.
I told him he needed to be quiet tonight or Santa can’t come in and leave them the potions they asked for.
I got some boops and some growls but finally a quiet boy.
Sleep tight my little dark wizards, Santa is bringing you dark hearts of joy.
The puffballs are next. Their feathers blowing in the breeze.
Cmon Cookie, let's go in with Milk and Cream.
Santa is big and jolly; he might scare you on accident baby puffs.
Cream starts strutting to show me he is tough.
I praise him for loving Cookie and Milk so.
That he is so brave to fight for them in rain or snow.
I pep talk him up to keep watch but to get some rest.
Tomorrow was a big day and he needed to look his best.
I pat them off to sleep for the night.
Santa's getting close but there's 5 more to get through tonight.
The next coop is a blast from the past.
Reigned by 2 princes from the future gone back.
Where there is Marty. There is Mcfly.
My beautiful boys that just happened to come by.
Brothers and friends through and through.
Having only each other for as long as they knew.
This is their home, their Delorian, their warmth from the cold.
“Santa” I whisper hoping the wind carries my voice,
“Please use your magic to ease my boys’ souls.”
They’ve had it rough.
This is their 3rd home so far at less than a year old.
Their birthday is a week away and some soldier flies would make their day.
They deserve the world and I'll try my best;
These boys will always be my forever pets.
“Cmon boys”, I say with a smile “Let's get up to the
roost.
Santa is almost here, and I need to scoot.”
I hear the feathers and the bawks coming down the yard to the Comebacks Pen.
They are wide open tonight.
Parmesan, Alfredo, Emerald and Beetlejuice ensure
everyone is in and locked up tight.
They look identical to their moms and Ozzy is their dad.
They have his cheeks; I just hope they aren't as bad.
Santa (I begged to my heart) if
you could work with God on this for me,
don't let these new boys be even near the same level of jerk that their father can be.
I laugh to myself as I see Moon and Topaz, Gemma's spawns jump over the top of Celine and Celest.
A nightly competition and it's a race! It's a race for the 2nd roost, that one is the best!
Cupid and Elvira slide in quick and settle down without a peep.
Nug and Dime took this as a challenge to be as loud as they could be.
Cupid Avril and Revelation are tough little birds; they are still the smallest in this flock.
They still get picked in but soon I predict, some little bully birds will get a nice shock.
Avril is fast, faster than her dad.
Cupid is so sweet until she gets mad.
Revelation is smart, she's always thinking of a plan.
These three remind me of Olive, Pimento, and Billy Jo. The original clan.
Goodnight sweet babies, I call to them as I continue,
your mamas are tucked in, and dads’ eyes are clear.
Soon you’ll hear bells jingling and eight flying reindeer!
The Robertsons are waiting. In the call room. In their traditional line.
Each one calls out a separate greeting to make sure I say hi.
Phil and Si are the leaders of this family flock
Jep, Willie, Reed and John Luke take care of the stock.
Korie and Sadie keep the crew in line and out of Phil’s way.
And of course, there would be no Phil without Ms. Kay.
A family uncertain, unwanted and in the face of fear and lost faith.
They rose high and mighty when the ranch was blessed with their grace.
Goodnight my little light babies Santa is coming any minute now.
Keep your eyes up and ears alert, you don't want to miss the merry sound.
From the slight distance through the quieting air, rings out a loud repetitive quack.
Doodle has spotted me, there's no turning back.
She leads her crew of misfit ducks through the pen pushing them this way and that.
Cayenne is spicy and sassy, Quackers is weird. Mayo has Doodle's back.
Miracle is Doodle’s essence reborn. Without her, Whiskey and Molasses would be torn.
They run and flee when we come near, Yell and quack until we leave telling us to come back.
Oh Santa, how much love all wrapped up in one little quack.
Santa's coming Doodle Bear, you better be nice to
him my dear, otherwise he may only leave you ice and no Doodle beer.
She quacks back at me like she understood me just fine.
A smile on her bill and a spark in her eye.
She rushes off to the pond and gives me her little shake.
I love how her spirit shines.
Goodnight my duck babies. You deserve all the ponds and streams.
You mean more to us than you could ever dream.
As I round back to the house, there's one last stop to make.
The brooder in the carport with the ranch’s newest inmates.
Bars of steel keep them in until Bruce can handle these crazy women.
3 giants from Jersey pulled of the shore,
Sami, Snooki and JWoww, they love their hugs and of course their food. Who could ask for more.
Then Golden Girls moved all the way from Florida earlier this year.
Blanche, Rose, Dorothy, and even Sophia is here.
Welcome to the ranch my loves, you'll be in the coop soon with the others in due time.
But tonight, you get to meet someone so special, it will change your life.
His Name is Santa, and he is a jolly guy.
He visits farms and he can even fly.
He brings presents and treats to all babies he sees.
He comes once a year and you can tell, right before he sets sail.
The sky changes color and the birds sing loud.
Announces Santa is coming to town.
When you hear the bells jingle and the low bellow of ho ho ho
You'll see Santa come round the corner and the sleigh will go down
The reindeer land oh so soft, their hooves barely make a sound.
But you get this warm feeling and know he’s close around.
A twinkle in his eye, a smile on his face, a present in hand and joy he brings to all.
Even to those mean ones like Ozzy that deserve to be culled.
Ozzy and Bruce will call out to announce his landing.
The girls will get excited and start dancing.
Santa loves feather babies; he loves them all.
From the great big ones like you and even the real small.
He brings bugs and toys and fruit and grapes.
And all he wants is for you to believe and have faith.
Santa loves all birds in so many ways. He likes your combs, your wattles and even your little chicken toes.
He loves your innocence and strength and the little things no one knows.
He knows all your names, all the tricks you play.
If you were mean or if you just had a bad day.
Santa can talk to chickens and can understand geese.
He can calm a storm and leave a sense of peace.
Santa is so special, a chicken chose him when he was young,
He gave Santa magic and a friend for life. Santa named him Doug.
So don’t be scared little ones, be excited and glad, you’re about to meet the greatest friend you will ever have.
Momma asked Santa to come tonight a little early tonight.
So, he can meet you.
and see his heart is true.
If look closely as he passes by, you’ll catch the twinkle of Doug shining bright.
Don’t be frightened of him, my little ones. Santa is a member of our family and our farm.
I love you so much babies but it's time to go night.
I think I can hear the hooves tip toeing up the driveway on my right.
I shall see you in the morning.
Keep an ear out for warnings.
I'll sing to you while you fall asleep until I see the red of his hat and the black of his feet.
Goodnight sweethearts, sleep tight I love you.
Goodnight sweethearts, sleep tight my loves
I'll see you when the sun is shining
Goodnight sweethearts, sleep tight my loves.
And even if the sun refuses to shine.
I'll still be here at morning time.
So please don't fret and please don't cry.
I'll still be here right by your side.
Goodnight sweethearts, sleep tight I love you.
Goodnight sweethearts, sleep tight my loves
I'll see you when the sun is shining
Goodnight sweethearts, sleep tight my loves.
I love you babies.
When light breaks and the joy of the day rises, you’ll be met with magical surprises.
I stand up and call out to all my flocks
Goodnight my babies, I love you forever and a day
Yes, even you Ozzy in your own special way.
Merry Christmas.
