This is exactly how my 5 year old girl passed. We had euthanasia booked in for her at the vet, but she naturally died the night before instead. Thank you for reassuring me that I did everything right.

These hens reliably lay an egg a day in their first year of life, that much is true.

But what the breeders won't tell you is their susceptability to health issues after their first year of life. All three of my Bond Browns developed reproductive disease (EYP, egg binding and ascites) at around 2 years old due to their prolific egg laying. This has claimed the life of one of my girls and has required me to keep the other two medicated with Superlorin, which means no more eggs but at least they are still alive.

Because of this I do not consider them to be a hardy breed suitable for backyard owners. I think commercial breeds like these are best avoided by those who care about the long term welfare of their flock.
