The first thing you need to do is find or build a coop that will be comfortable for you and your flock. I would recommend building yours since it would be less expensive. I built mine on a sheet of concrete that had been left there when I bought my house.

The second thing you need to do is find the right type of chickens to fit you and your property. I recommend 50 chickens for each acre.
The chickens that I like most are the barred rock chicken, Australorps, and Rhode Island Reds.
The third thing you need to do is find the right tools and equipment you need, like hay, nesting boxes, food, water carriers, light, etc. You are going to also need perches and things they may sleep on at night since they like to sleep high up.

The fourth thing that you need to do is make sure that your nesting boxes are clean and comfy for the hens, clean your coop once a year if you have a few chickens. But if you have a lot, you should clean for more than a year.
