Our flock started when my mother-in-law bought my twins 6 leg horns for Easter....4 roostes and 2 hens. I was very unhappy about this present but my unhappiness soon turned into an obsession. The following Spring, I bought 3 plymouth rocks and 7 sex links.....then 20 more....then more and more and more. Our oldest hens are 2 of the Plymouth Rocks....the "Brats" and "Rusty", 1 of our original sex links. These 3 hens just turned 8 years old this past March, 2010.
[FONT=times new roman,times] Our flock is currently a mixed flock consisting of plymouth rocks, sex links, leg horns, easter eggers...and we currently have 4 baby easter eggers and 4 baby buff orpingtons who hatched on May 3, 2010. We do not have any roosters at this time...we don't seem to have much luck with them.[/FONT]
They have a nice size coop with a fenced in area for them to play and run around. They do get to free range several times a month but not too often do to our increasing hawk population in our area.
Our girls get a great variety of foods....their base diet consists of their egg charger pellets. They also get fresh fruits and veggies, breads, meats....you name it, they eat it....I often tell them I think they are really pigs and not chickens. LOL!
Our girls are part of the family and are handled often as babies...they do not seem to like to be handled as much as they get older but do allow themselves to be held on occassion.
