I brought home four wooden racks from work that come with spring bulbs or berry vines in them. They get thrown away when they are done with them so I'm recycling them and the wood is very good wood on them.
I've brought home three silkies to put in this new coop. I began building it in my greenhouse and taking apart the racks as I repurposed one into the little coop. I wanted to build it myself and only got the three sides done when I fell and pulled all the muscles in my right leg and rear so my hubby took over with me helping as I could with no bending or twisting.
This is the racks I started with and the top pic is the sides and back I got done.
We got the front on and more photos follow. The front has two windows from the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Yuma. They were actually cabinet doors. I will open them to the sides in the summer for ventilation as there is 1/4" construction screen behind them. The silkies go down and up the ramp just fine and we ended up putting a nipple waterer on it and a tube for feed. They haven't figured out the nipple yet so I still have the chicken waterer in the little area.
The roost inside has been lowered down to ground level now with the bend going up. The silkies wouldn't get on it raised up like that. I also put sand inside and use a kitty litter scoop in it to clean. It works really great. I'm planning on changing the litter out in the big coop and putting sand in it too since it works so well.
This is Tina Turner, and I have two buffs named Selena and Reba. Selena has white feathers on her tail and Reba has black on her tail. I love the way they cluck. I have learned not to have them out the same time as the big girls, they run at them and attack. To each his own pen.
This is how it looks right now. He built a nestbox and we have the roof done. I plan on staining the roof a brown color. It is a poly something roofing and I need to touch up the paint here and there but it is mostly done and in place. It is inbetween a flower bed and my wrought iron. In the summer the mimosa tree will shade it and keep them cool.
The back is up against the fence but we can reach the egg box from there and fill the water and feed from there. It has chicken wire around so they are kept in that space.
