After 3 years of talking about building a coop and getting some chickens we finally did it! My husband likes to research and plan in advance so we started out by looking at coops that were for sale at different locations in our area to get ideas. At first he was going to build one, then we were going to just buy one and finally he decided he could build a coop and put together all of the things we liked about the ones we looked at. The end result is "our perfect coop". It may not be perfect for anyone else but we would like to share our design!

After looking at ideas and coop designs on this website, Richard woke me in the middle of the night this past winter and said "I've got it!" Much to my surprise that he was awake past 10 PM I asked him "what do you have???" He said that he had a dream about building a chicken coop and he "had a plan in his mind". So here goes...

The plan was to build a coop 10' long by 6' wide, with 5 nest boxes. The inside has a 6' by 6' area for the chickens and a 4' by 6' feed and storage area with a sliding door seperating the two. We re-purposed windows from a dismantled camper. Our total cost without chickens or supplies was just over $1000. We did all of the work ourselves.

He started on January 31, 2014. He had to build most of it inside the barn because we had a very cold winter.
