We are in summer now, and we try to make our chickens as comfortable as possible in the heat. There are many ways we try to do this. Visit this topic of the week thread, naming ways to keep your chickens cool in summer.
I will show you my way, chicken slushies! We have all heard of slushies, a frozen drink made of crushed ice and (mainly fruit) flavouring. It's a delicious cold snack for a hot day. I'm going to show you how to make them for chickens!
Ingredients
- A canned veggie in water (eg. corn and\or peas)
- a slice of bread
- a shallow container, preferably transparent
- optional fresh fruit (eg. watermelon)
lets get making!
1) empty out your can (including the water) into your container. It should only take up 1\2 of the container.
2) make sure the water completely covers the veggies. If it doesn't, add some more water. place in the freezer.
3) Place in the freezer for 30mins to 1hr. When you take it out, it should be completely frozen through, but the ice must be delicate and brittle.
4) add some water on the top, it shouldn't mix with the corn and peas.
tear up the bread and put the pieces in the water.
5) place it back in the freezer for a couple of hours until it is rock solid.
6) pop the ice out of the container and onto a plate (or keep it in the container, it's your choice)
7) place it in the microwave for 30 seconds, this will loosen up the ice and give it a slushie texture.
8) use a fork to crush up the ice. It should start to resemble a slushie now.
9) OPTIONAL- add some fresh fruit to your slushie
Now it is ready to serve! you can leave it on your plate, or put it in a cup. chickens of all ages will love it!
Thanks for reading.
