I’m going to post pics of my Opal Legbar here as she grows up. I hope this helps anyone who is looking for info on this pretty new color form of the Legbar.
Opal Legbar were created by @cjwaldon by using an Isabel leghorn and crossing them with Cream Legbars. They are are auto-sexing at birth, and lay pretty blue eggs. The birds are lavender barred and crested. Males have the barring pattern along with gold highlights. Females are either pearl grey with silver barring or have light-yellow coloring around their necks. The birds will have a silver or peach breast color. From a distance and in the sun, these birds look like they are glowing. They do well in confinement and also free ranging.
Unfortunately, I don’t know where my Opal came from as I picked her up at my local feed store. I assume a hatchery, but she wasn’t going for the hatchery prices (which are crazy right now), so maybe she came from a local breeder. So I can’t say she is a prime example of an Opal Legbar, but she is still going to be gorgeous. I assume if she is from a local breeder she’s not perfect breeding stock since they usually aren’t letting those go. But she is cute, and she’s mine, so I wanted to start a thread showing her growth as I have not been able to find many week by week photos of these birds.
She is currently two weeks old and here are some photos from the day I got her (she was 3 days old) to today at 2 weeks. I will come back here and post each week showing her progress. I hope you enjoy. Edit: I just went back to the feed store and picked up a second Opal Legbar, which I am naming Pearl. She is from the same hatch as Opal and photos from 2 weeks onward will be of either of them.
