The coop with an added run. Some friends helped us to convert our old doghouse (on the right) into a temporary coop for the chicks until they were big enough to go into the henhouse with the older hens. Now we can use it for a sick bay/timeout if needed (thankfully, we have not needed either yet). For now, we put the board back in the cutout window and it's a great place to store supplies.

Our Ladies
We have 4 laying hens (Two red sexlinks and two buff orpingtons)
Here are the residents of our henhouse. Lucy and Ruby came to us in May, 2009 as 1-year old hens, refugees who had been living at a relative's house, despite city ordinances which prohibited them there. They are hard working ladies - faithful layers!

Miss Wilma's first egg simply appeared rather unceremoniously in the nesting box alongside Betty's on October 5.

Here's our winter set-up. We wrap the smallest run beneath the henhouse completely in plastic, leaving the pop door open , and wrap only half of the adjoining run. The large open run we leave open and unwrapped - that run goes mostly unused in the wintertime, but is well used in spring, summer and fall.
