DO NOT WORRY THIS IS NOT HARD! I am not going to be teaching you how to blow glass or anything. You do need to buy a thing, but it is not expensive at goodwill, and they always have plenty (not the bins)
I bought a metal waterer and began to have a problem, it started to rust. Then I tried replacing that with a plastic one but it grew gross green slime in less than a day, and smelled funny. This led me to conclude that these materials do not make good chicken waterers. So I went searching for a solution. This is what I found after over 5 hours of trying stuff, and 2 trips to goodwill to buy material. I am sharing this because it is such a good solution to all my waterer problems and maybe someone else needs this too.
Step 1: buy a water dispenser with an airtight lid and a bowl that has a rim taller than the hole in the water dispenser. You also need a cork for the water dispenser's little hole for the dispenser bit. You need to remove that. You can test if a water dispenser is has a lid that is airtight by filling it with watter and setting it upside-down. If it drips, then it isn't.
---note, if you cannot find one that is airtight or are shopping at goodwill you can make it airtight, we will get to that later----
Step 2: test again if the water dispenser is airtight. If it isn't, get a balloon and cut the top off. Then cover the lid in the baloon. I think this would work for screw on lids, but it is best if you have one of the lids like the one on mine, which you can see in the photos.
Step 3: once that is airtight, fill your water dispenser and place it in the bowl. Take the cork out and it should stop filling once the hole is covered by the water. This is because you have created a vaccum, and until the air can escape (when the hole is not fully covered by water), no water will be dispensed.
If you need to you can troubleshoot it until it work then try again. I hope that with this it will not take you as long as it took me.
If you want to gaurentee it working, buy a yorkshire clasic glassware water dispenser with the type of lid mine has, and a pyrex bowl. You will also need a baloon and might have to adjust the lid until it works, I fill mine from the hole because I do not want to re adjust it every time.
Sorry this is a bit of a dissapointing article, I am super tired. let me know if you need more help.
