Cross Ventilation In Our Coop

Ventilation is very important, as you probably know so that's why I made sure to have more than enough for my babies.

Incorporating ventilation into this structure was pretty easy.

Let me explain our ventilation.
At the very top of the 4th wall and the back wall there are 2ft wide and 1ft tall ventilation holes between each rafter.
At the end of each rafter which spans about 1½ ft away from the wall there is a header board that is covered in black tin on the outside to prevent wicking.
Ventilation

Look at rafters from outside

Between each of these rafters air flows in and out freely on both sides of the structure, making perfect cross-ventilation.
There is wire covering those openings now to make sure no racoon climbs in.

It isn't obvious that there's ventilation since the headerboard and backboard, though not halting ventilation, block a clear view into the shelter or to the outside.

Before we installed the backboard & header board wind would whip through the structure and we knew we wanted good air movement but not to chill everyone, so we added them. Kind of like when a porch awning covers a window so you can leave it open in a storm.

The other reason the headerboard and backboard are awesome is because they prevent the rafters from wicking any rain that would otherwise hit them into the coop and make it a soggy mess.

In conclusion; Yes, there is adequate ventilation and I love headerboards.

Next we'll be building the run and installing a whale latch on the door.
