Shadrach’s Multi Coops

Very well presented. Thought provoking as I plan my own multi flock homestead.

I love the idea of having multiple coops that are less "fancy," more practical, and equally functional. We are about to embark on building a new coop. Before reading this I was thinking we should build one super coop that would hold many chickens. It has been daunting and worrisome for us considering the time and cost the venture will require. After reading this I feel much more comfortable "dumbing down" the concept and making a couple coops more like these. Also, we have multiple roosters that we would love to keep, and I think going in the multi coop direction will better facilitate this. Thank you Shadrach!

So interesting! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and designs and experiences. I'm new to chickens and coops, but I did look at the designs on BYC and picked 3 that I liked and just combined the aspects that I liked and used plywood and friends to help me build it.

For anyone wanting to keep multiple roosters, multi coops makes sense. Interesting article and good pictures.

So many good suggestions for our next coop. We put our coop in the small woods we own, but plan on a new one in the next year. Chicken math dictates we need more chickens. We will certainly use several of your design elements in doing so. Thanks Shad! Well said.

Anyone looking for a basic, solid coop need look no further than here. And you're right, chickens don't need aesthetics ... but sometimes WE do! These coops would be very easy to "dress up" with a little paint or trim, if desired. Personally, I like the clean look of these boxy coops.
I do find myself wishing the writer had followed up with some of the behavior he/she wanted to observe. How did that pan out? Could you possibly add some commentary on how the chickens sorted themselves out? Please?
