(1) Even though some Hatchery's sell sexed Chicks, their is no guarantee that they're all going to be the gender you're supposably buying. So make a plan in case you end up with an extra rooster!
(2) Chickens are not easy to keep! Some people think that chickens are simple and behaved animals that lay an egg EVERY DAY, well these people don't know what they're talking about
. So lets break this down for you new Chicken owners, Chickens have many varieties of sicknesses. Although many people are mainly concerned about Avian Flu, (me as well) their are many more sicknesses including Coryza, Fowl pox, Marek's disease, and many more. I bet you probably didn't know that chickens can sneeze either, well that's called an Upper Respiratory disease. Chickens are great at hiding any sickness until it's pretty bad, so it's a good idea to sit with your flock and observe they're behavior.
(3) Quite literally everything wants Chicken dinner
I know what you're thinking "my coops predator proof", let's just say I thought the same thing a few chickens ago. You might want to double check on that coop of yours!
(4) Chicken math is real y'all
so go ahead and double the size of that coop. I know how it goes, you think you can control yourself, but the next thing you know you'll have twenty Chickens instead of five!
(5) CHICKENS POOP QUITE A BIT, believe me it's gross, but over time you'll eventually get used to it. And let me tell you, you don't wanna know how many times if fell into, stepped on, or mistakenly grabbed chicken poop over the course of owning chickens.
(6) CHICKEN TEMPERAMENTS, Most roosters are docile and calm, especially breeds like Brahmas, Leghorns, Silkies, and larger breeds, but you're more likely to end up with a mean rooster when raising bantam breeds like seramas, Old English Game Bantams, and more. When hens go Broody they will likely attack you to protect her eggs, this is different from mean, this is just a natural instinct that will go away after hatching out her eggs or having them taken away.
(7) Chickens are all different, no matter what breed, gender, or color, none will be the same. If you have a small yard or live in the city, than bantams are for you. Some cities don't allow roosters, I recommend Murray McMurray Hatchery to ensure you get all hens. But if you have a larger sized yard Welsummers, Broilers, and many other larger breeds are what you want!
(8) And lastly, CAN I HAVE MULTIPLE ROOSTERS? The answer to that is yes, (sometimes) although many people will say differently. Roosters can live together without any problems (usually). But I don't recommend having more than one rooster with less than t
en hens, (although hen to rooster ratios vary between breeds.) Bantams are a little different though, I have multiple Bantam roosters together and they don't have a single problem, but other people have had issues keeping Bantams together.
I hope that this answered your questions, and if you're not sure about something or have anymore questions let me know
