The Campine chicken originated in northern Belgium and is an old European egg layer chicken breed. In addition to producing white shelled eggs, they were bred for egg production.

Campine chickens are identical to the Belgian Braekel in all ways except for their size. It lays a fair number of white eggs and is relatively small in size.

Currently, Campine chickens are mostly raised and bred as ornamental birds.

The American Poultry Association added the Campine chicken to its Standard of Perfection in 1914. This breed also comes in a bantam variety.

Campine Chicken Characteristics

Campine chickens come in two color varieties: silver and gold. The color pattern of each bird is the same for both sexes. Silver campine varieties have beetle-green barred feathers on pure white ground, with a neck hackle of pure white.

Golden Campine varieties also have the same pattern. Instead of white, their heads, bodies, and necks are of golden color.

Campine chickens are very active, very hardy, and very curious. Known to be excellent fliers, they are among the rarer breeds of chicken. Their legs are dark blue (like a Silkie) and their earlobes are pure white. Campine chickens are also known for their cold hardiness and can survive in a variety of climates. However, they are also prone to frostbite since they possess a single comb which can sometimes be large in size (especially on the Campine males).

Behavior/Temperament

Campine chickens are very active, hardy, and curious. These wonderfully good foragers enjoy being outdoors and free-ranging as a flock most of the time.
It is common for Campine hens to lay medium-size white eggs. However, they are not broody. The Campine rooster/cockerel is a beautiful ornamental fowl.
