I finally got around to moving our (un-carved) Halloween pumpkin off of the front porch today, while I was stringing the Christmas lights outside.

I laid the busted pumpkin in the yard and let my 4 girls go at it. They spent 2 hours picking that sucker clean. I thought i was going to have to put the pumpkin in the coop with them tonight!

When we bought our pumpkins in October, we bought one for the chickens. They did not really care for it. The other day, I was putting up the Christmas decorations, and figured it was time to remove the pumpkins. I cut one in half and put it out there for the chickens, and by the next morning, they had it down to a thin rind.
Your little ones seem to be enjoying it. It's nice to recycle yard decorations!!

I didnt think they would eat pumpkin because it is so hard,, I dont know why!!! They eat everything else.
So I chunked the leftover pumpkins up and stuck it in a roaster pan into the oven for about an hour or two.
The chickens went NUTS over the stuff!!
Nothing left but a thin skin.

I made pumpkin soup and gave the rest of the carcass to the chooks, but they didn't go for it. Chickens can be strange sometimes.

A day later and the girls are still working on that pumpkin. They moved onto the larger portion and are all four standing inside of it, pecking away!

My girls reacted the same way. "What's that dumb orange-lookin' thing you so ungraciously plopped in our run????"

I put our carved pumpkin in the run. They devoured it! All that was lwft was a thin skin too! It is funny how one flock loves something and someone elses flock thinks "What makes you think that I am going to eat that!!??"

I put a whole pumpkin in my run and the girls pecked a hole in the side and hollowed it out! My friends chickens wouldn't touch the one she gave them, even when she cut it up. They are funny!
