we have some lentils, which are pretty high in protein, and wanted to know if it is possible to feed them to chickens. do they have to be soaked like beans?

I have given lentils to chickens but I cooked them some first. That seemed to be the sensible thing to do but I see that Purdue University says: "Lentils which fail to meet food grade standards (graded #3 or below) can be used as livestock feed because of their high protein content and lack of digestive inhibitors."

Since the inhibitors were the reasons that I was cooking them, maybe I didn't need to do that. Can't see why it would be necessary to soak them first, either. I know that some BYC'ers sprout lentils for their chickens.
