I don't have a heated waterer and am worried about whether my flock is getting enough water thru the day. Before I shuck out for a new waterer (which I see from posts on here they're a pain to deal with) has anyone used a heating pad under the waterer? Or any other DIY solutions? I'm in VA so it's not arctic temps but pretty cold lately.....

I remember someone posting last winter about using those toe and hand warmers under their water container in the coop to help it keep from freezing up. I am fortunate I have someone here during the day when I am work to give fresh water.

I'm sure someone will chime in with more info. Best of luck.

today if it warms up so that i can, im going to dig a hole under the water can in my chicken coop and put a light bulb under it.
I bet that would do it. gonna try it anyway.
sad to see the chickens come to me when I go out to feed and ignore the feed for the water. aj

if you use the large black rubber tubs for water and dump them out at night and fill them up in the morning then they will stay unfrozen a little longer, also make sure to put them in the sun so the black will warm up the water

Hello, I have been using the light bulb in the cookie tin idea and it has been working great. I have a 75 watt bulb in a cookie tin and the water has not froze yet! We have been having single digit temps here at night, but if its not as cold by you, try a 40 watt bulb. That should work..

Last winter was my first winter with the girls and I had alot of problems with freezing water...freezing fingers....freezing taps......this year after reading some threads on here I went and bought a heated dog dish and I LOVE IT!!! Now I use a empty plastic orange juice jug and fill it with water(in the warm house) and every morning I fill up the dish .If its dirty I empty it and wipe it down before putting water in ....and I will fill it up at night ....It needs to be elevated so they dont get it dirty FAST....I read that some people place the red/white waterer right into the dish also...

I use the heated dog bowl too. It works wonderful! It took about two days to realize that I need to get it up outa the straw though. Ha
I also use the automatic dog feeder. I prop the door open so they can get
the food. My chicks might be barking sometime soon.

By the way the heated dog bowl cost about 10 dollars at Rural King

I use the 3 gallon heated waterer and have had temps as low as -15 with windchills of -35 and have not had a lick of ice this winter I love the heated fountain. It has saved me a lot of headaches.
