Vaccinate the chicks?

I just got my shipment from McMurray this week.
I opted for the MAREKS but chose to do the medicated feed
instead of the offered Coccidiostat vaccination. Experienced farmer told me that is what he does and has great success?
Good Luck

When I got my shipment of chicks from Mcmurray last April I opted for both vacs. and so far none of my chicks[which are huge now] have been sick with anything!!!!!

Hey there, I remember reading somewhere about having chicks vaccinated with Mareks need to be seperated from the rest of the flock I think for a period of time, cause your older flock may get Mareks... you can ask the hatchery about that. Maybe someone else can help me out on that one.
I've never had mine vaccinated before, but if I could I'd atleast get the cocci vaccine.
Where are ya ordering your chics from?

Have a good one, Miriam

I was told that if you were starting a first time flock, without ever having chickens before, and not introducing them to an older flock, that you dont need to vaccinate them for anything. The only way they could get Mareks would be from another chicken, and if there arent any, they cant get it? I am all into holistic approaches and I prefer to be one of the few who dont over vaccinate or feed medicated feed, but thats my approach which might not suit everyone. I also know that a local farmer who does the same gets more for her chicken meat and eggs because she lets everyone know that they are chemical free.

i didn't get mine vaccinated for mareks cuz the hachery couldn't tell me if it was from a live or dead sample. and i don't do the cocci cuz i feed my chicks chick starter which has the medication for cocci.

Ideal does not recommend vaccinating chicks for backyard flocks. However, if your flock has a history of Mereks, it probably would be a good idea.

There are several strains of coccidiosis. The medicated feed usually does the trick for the most common types. I do not know which strains the vaccine covers. ???

I was originally going with McMurray but now I'm not sure.....

I'm really only going to be set up for 12 hens.....

Figuring on losing a couple I'll still have 8-10 extra.....

I may go with Ideal and order less....but then again I heard they ship extras for warm anyway right?...or am I thinking of someone else.....

Yep, Ideal sends roosters for warmth on small orders.

Have you talked to your local feed store to see if they are ordering chicks ? They may included your order with theirs. That is what my feed store did and I was able to get several different breeds.
