Help me figure out what camera to get

All I have had digital-wise are cheap point and shoot. It is so hard to get subjects in motion. You click the button and a few seconds later the subject is no longer in the pic. Well it finally died and it is time to get a new camera. So what do I get?

I can't afford all the fancy lens of a DSLR but have seen higher end point and shoot, sometimes called mega zoom. But I don't know which ones are good.

Please give me some ideas.

I have a point and shoot Panasonic TZ3 and my son the TZ5. For the price and size they are great little cameras. There is also the TZ9 which is even better.
 
Go with the highest Optical zoom you can get when comparing camera's in a price range.
Also a lithium battery stays charged longer from my experience. If it takes double AA's , you will go through TONS of batteries. .... a camera that takes a lithium that you can charge in the camera is what I've found to be best.

Those are the best to features I can think of to look for.

I have an Olympus SP560 with an 18X Optical zoom. It's a wonderful little camera and takes more professional pictures. You will probably need to practice a little bit with some of the settings, but I am in love with the macro AND the zoom. It will cost you about $400, but it is definitely worth it. Nikon has a pretty comparable camera for the same price, but I just didn't like the build of that one.

My husband just bought me the Panasonic TZ5 and I love it! Very user friendly and takes great pics. Has 10x zoom and pics are very clear. Seemed like a lot of bang for the buck-nearly 1/2 off at Circuit City before they closed. Good Luck!

I just got a Cannon A1000IS power shot, I have not learned all of the features yet, and there are so many great features, but it does take great pic's. The price is in the range of $ 179.00-199.00, which is good for a great little camera.

I have a Nikon CoolPix at home and a Panasonic something or other at work.

I miss my regular old film camera sometimes.
Having the HUGE view window on the ones at home and work just chews up the batteries. Although at work I at least have re chargeables. Which is good since I swear EVERYONE in the company has been coming up to my office and using the camera lately. If I go to download pics for business and get a "naughty" one some day I am going to be ticked. And horrified
 
I am very pleased with my Canon SX100 IS- 10X Optical Zoom, 8.0 Mega Pixels. It was less than $200.00.

I don't know much about photography, and this "PHD" camera is perfect for me.
