I was candling my eggs (which are fertile!

) and I noticed that the candler got really really hot, and it warmed up the eggs noticeably too. So I stuck it under a thermometer and it went up to 120F (it was still going up, but I was afraid the thermometer might break so I took it off)! One of the eggs, the most lively little baby

, was under the light for a while (less than a minute). Do you think he'll be ok? Or could I have burnt him, or worse, killed him? I'll be candling quicker from now on, but I'm worried that I might have hurt those eggs.

Also, I candled another egg that had a clear, dark, thick ring all the way around it. It wasn't solid all the way through, but more like dots concentrated together to form a ring. I thought perhaps it was very synchronized bacteria and that the chick was surely dead, but then I saw the embryo move and wiggle (for sure it was the embryo, I wasn't moving the egg at all). I was considering cracking it open! I suspect that it will die within the next few days, but has anyone else had a blood ring like this, with a living chick inside?

Ok, edited to add a picture of the egg in question. The picture isn't that great, the ring is actually very dark and not as blotchy. There are still a few visable veins, but not as many as yesterday. But... it's still moving.

Also, the date on the egg is not the date it's due to hatch! LOL. Is it still viable? Why hasn't it hatched yet?

That is the date that it was laid by little miss Fiyona. It is due to hatch on the 5th.

I just read this on "Yahoo! Questions" while I was looking up blood ring. Someone had a chick with what they thought was a blood ring but a moving embryo. The replies said to just leave it in the incubator for a few days. Blood ring or not a moving embryo is a live embryo. There is also a post I just replied to a few threads below yours, its something like "Blood Ring ::cries::"

I left a reply to hers saying I did the same thing by opening an egg that I thought was a blood ring only to find a heartbeat. Not fun. If its moving then dont crack it. Save yourself the horror of what I saw.

Jeez, don't think I'd ever want to hatch again if I had to watch a baby die because I cracked it open! I was going to leave it in anyways, just curious if this is common or if I'm running the risk of bacteria growing. I'll try to get a photo of it... I've never seen a blood ring like this.

It will take a bit of time to cook the chick, so under a minute will be just fine. Don't toss anything unless you really know till day 14. By then, living will be dark blobs, and dead will be rings. I like LED candlers for the fact they don't heat up nearly as much. High output LED do heat up a bit, but not near as fast or as much.

A blood ring:

jnjross... sort of... but the ring was maybe an 1/8 of an inch thick, and there were veins above it and chick that bobbed and wiggled in the middle.

How much does an LED candler cost? I wouldn't mind investing in a really good candler, but I don't have a lot of money at the moment to spend.

I just use highpower led flashlights. However, the ones I have are a bit costly... but well worth the money. They are tactical daily carry types in addition to candlers. You can see though your hand with them. The surefire 6p and egletac T10C2. Both use lithium batteries.
