:/One of our hens went from red to orange. Is this a problem?

Quickly, or over a few days? Chickens, especially males, flush their faces from red to pale red or red orange. They do that in response to temperature, or if they're relaxing or sunbathing. Males may be pale while relaxing and then flush their faces red instantaneously for a dance. If it happened over time, she may have stopped laying, she may be using pigments for egg production and can't stay as red any longer, or she's old or sick.

We are seniors, new to chickens. We have Dominiques . There are7 hens and 1 rooster. They were hatched last May. This winter the comb and wattles on one changed from red to orange. They are wonderful and very entertaining.Everyone seems fine {except one that they pick on_ not the orange one}.We get 4 to 6 eggs every day. Should we be worried about this color change?

I don't think it's anything to worry about. There are a few diseases that cause a pale face, but as long as your birds are acting perky they should be just fine.

I have a SLW young (4.5 months) who does the same thing. My 2 year old LH (who is white) does the same thing also. Then I noticed that I only noticed it on these to because it’s easy to see their little faces...due to breed color etc. Its like they get pale for a bit then back to normal. We’ve had horrendous heat here my girls have a pretty sweet setup (shade & misters) they never show signs of heat stress (panting & holding out their wings) but they look pale. Now this morning when I was picking grapes my little (crybaby) SLW went pale again cause’ she was getting pushed around a bit by others trying to get their treats. I thought “this couldn’t be” so I watched and later on did the same thing and so did she! So I wouldn’t call it a emotional thing but chickens communicate in the subtlest ways little clucks, purring, grunts etc. I think she was having a little temper tantrum and it showed...in her cheeks. I find chickens so interesting.
