This thread is just for people who have finished and mailed their letters. This way we can see just how many letters have been sent.

It would be great if you could give a short description of what you wrote, also, state whether you sent in by mail or e-mail. Handwritten or typed.

For more information please check it out here:

Also, please keep discussion over there, and keep the letter updates over here.

Let's make a statement!

I wrote my letter this morning. It was handwritten, three pages.

I put "RE: White House Victory Garden" at the top of the first page.

I thanked President and Mrs. Obama for their committment to self-sufficiency, environmental issues and health by starting the first modern Victory Garden, then made the suggestion that they add chickens to their backyard. I mentioned the recent article about chickens in the National Geographic magazine, as well.

I covered some of the major misconceptions about chickens (noise, smell, disease), then made the suggestion that chickens would be a wonderful educational experience for their daughters and explained why.

In closing, I again thanked them for their committment to the environment and health, reminding them that raising chickens would be an innovative addition to what they have already done in terms of these issues.

Below my name at the bottom of the page, I wrote the URL for BYC and gave them a short explanation of what BYC is.

I don't know if I count to post here or not since I sent mine well before the the other thread was started?

But anyway, if I do count, I emailed. I said I was impressed with the example they are setting for the American people so far and that another natural step toward healthier eating and self sufficiency was owning chikens. I explained how my family, with only 7 laying hens, has more than enough eggs and how people from tiny little lots in town to huge rolling acres were starting to see the many benefits (many of which I pointed out) of owning chickens. I mentioned this site and how many members there are (and constantly growing)......just stuff like that.

It is hard to remember what all it said (and of course it was more well written) because it has been awhile.

I just got done submitting an email to them via whitehouse.gov as well. I applauded them for the things they have done, and told them that I hoped these things would continue. I mentioned some of the positive things that could be accomplished by keeping a small flock of chickens at the White House.

Here's my letter

Hello!

I think it is great that Mrs Obama is wanting to start a garden at the Whitehouse. I believe that too many of us Americans have slipped away from being self-sufficiant and relying too heavily on the government. If we all just took the time to go back to our roots and were able to at least grow a garden, then these tough economic times wouldn't seem too bad. My grandparents survived the depression with no difficulty because they lived on a farm and were self-sufficiant. If we are headed toward a similar fate, shouldn't we all at least have the knowledge of what to do for ourselves?

I am so glad to see Mrs Obama taking the first steps to showing Americans the way it could be...but now we need to expand on that idea!

I know your daughters are allergic to dogs, but why not have a different pet all together? A pet...that makes you breakfast?!

Yes, I'm talking about chickens! Chickens can be so entertaining and very sweet! Of course, like all pets, they need to be taken care of and given medical care, but can you just imagine it? Waking up and going out to your "Mini Whitehouse Coop" and then grabbing a handful of fresh brown, white, or greenish blue eggs?!

There are so many different types of breeds of chickens you wouldn't believe! They provide pest control, fertilizer, and they will help that garden of the First Lady's tremendously! Just add to your compost pile and it takes off from there! Your vegetables will love you for it!

I know I've gone on a rant...but as a "mother hen" of 11, and soon to be 16 chickens, I've found more tranquility, happiness, and contentment just by watching these beautifully coloured creatures scratch around the yard, eating bugs, being pet and held.

If you do anything, at least visit a reputable, SMALL, chicken breeder and see how their coop, farm, and chickens look. It doesn't hurt to investigate before jumping straight into getting the chickens, and you can see then if your girls would be interested in them!

For more information on chickens, I am a member of a great online forum called BackYardChickens.com. You should check it out for information or have someone call local small farms and see if you can schedule a visit. I'm certain that they will be happy to share their knowledge and information!

Thank you for your time

Let's see if this gets a response!
