Ok, I've been trying to soak up all the information on this site! I have made so many mistakes with this first group in my borrowed incubator. I am a mess.

1st mistake - I set three different groups of eggs into one incubator. eek!

2nd mistake - could not decided what was what when candling.

3rd mistake - nothing to tell what humidity is in incubator.

possibly 4th mistake - put newspaper under eggs on day 18

possible 5th m istake - too much water in bottom of incubator because newspaper is now wet.

Please advise...

1. Keep wet newspaper in or take out??

2. Suggestions about 3 different hatch dates in one incubator?

3. One recommended to place eggs in egg carton to hatch and help keep away from other eggs in turner trays. thoughts feelings?

I am a mess. I just decided to begin to keep hens because we purchased some acreage and I wanted the fresh eggs and pretty hens/roos around. then that escalated into hatching eggs, because kids have 4-H projects and want to "help" and do their report on hatching eggs. I'm beside myselft that these eggs are not going to hatch at all. Candled first 10 on day 18 and all were dark except for air pocket except for 1. It was clear. Cracked open and chick stopped growing very young. so waiting very IMPATIENTLY for first 9 to hatch. Today is day 19.

I would take the wet newspaper out and put that rubbery shelf liner in or just lay them on the wire.

If you dont have another incubator there is probably not alot you can do unless you try and make one like several people on here have done.

I used the egg cartons for the first time the other day and I had the best hatch rate I have ever had but others had different results so I would say go with what you like best.

I had many problems with my incubator in a previous hatch my humidity was way to high and I could never get it down and the temperature got too high and too low. I think I had 31 out of 42 hatch when I thought surely they were all dead. Hopefully you will get some babys too.

your welcome.
Yea I know what you mean I am always stressed when I have eggs in the bator. I think maybe I should get one of those set it and forget it incubators. A little more expensive but would save me alot of nights awake making sure temperature stays the same. good luck with your hatch

Day 20 today and nothing. No sounds, no peeps trying to peek out...nothing.

I noticed in a couple of other threads that everyone recommended not opening the incubator during hatching. Could this be affecting my hatch? I have been opening off and on throughout the day and doing different things because I'm a mess over this first hatch.

I have concerns about humidity and do not know what my humidity is at the moment.

My plans are:

Get humidity detector.
Place it and sponge into bator.
Do not touch until chickies are hatched.

Would that be a good plan, or just leave them alone and do not open it again?

I have not way to get water in unless I open the lid.

I hate to say this but I think it is to late for any changes. Give them at least 3 more days. I would not open the bator any more since you don't know the humidity. I opened mine a couple of times (quickly) to take out chic's that were pecking the others but I had a high humidity of 71. Sound's like you are more prepared for the next time if these don't make it. I would just read every thing you can find about incubating on here. It sure helped me. I ended up with 17 out of 19 hatching. Good luck and don't give up yet. I had three I didn't think were going to hatch and woke up yesterday morning to three little fuzzy butts. They were on day 22.

Thank you so much for the advice. I did get a digital temp/humidity display. This basically says that my temp is around 97 and my humidity is 74%.

Now what?
