Has anyone tried expanded metal floors for their coops? I used to keep pigeons on floors made of expanded metal. i wonder if it would work for chickens. We live near Dallas, TX. I think it would be warm enough.

I would worry about it being slippery.... But honestly I don't know what expanded metal is... I am not sure if adults can get spraddle leg but I know my girls slip and slide on anything smooth.

Remember chicken poo is a lot larger-caliber than pigeon poo... I wonder if there might be issues with ease of cleaning?

I believe someone here was planning on doing that last year but I have no recollection who or whether it actually worked ok.

Good luck, if you try it make sure to post and report how it goes for you,

Pat

I'd also wonder how well humungo chicken poo would fit between the gaps in the expanded metal. Good idea, but I'd expect quick poo buildup.

That given you could hose it off every couple day. But do you really want to do that much work.

I know this is a old thread, but may as well help somebody like my former self ( before i built the coop). I did an expanded metal floor and love it. Poop can build up if it doesn't land on straw, and dry out. I add thick straw or hay in winter. My favorite part is how dry the coop is, we never have any mess on the eggs. I have not had to clean the coop yet, don't think i ever will. Sometimes when i move it, i rake up perfect compost materials. There are 7x10 foot deep green rectangles every where it has been on the farm.

Thank you for posting this. I am currently building a chicken coop, and was planning on using 3/4" expanded metal for the flooring. With 2 yard carts underneath (with the wood chips in it) to gather the poop. Can you give me an update as to how it's going? Would love to hear I'm on the right track.
