Is it worth the money to get the 1588?

I can get a Hovabator 1602 locally for less than $50. The 1588 I would have to order online and it would be $126 plus shipping. I am wanting to set 12 or less eggs. It is my first time incubating.
Is it worth spending two to three times the money to get the 1588? (Keeping in mind that money is always tight, but that I see no reason to waste money on a product that I won't be happy with).

I have read the archives on incubators and they just seem to go around and around with different people preferring different things. I know the 1588 is the better choice, but is it really worth the substantial price difference for a beginner?

I dont have one myself, but I have heard the 1588s are WELL worth the extra money.
I cant speak what you should do though,lol, because I still have LGs!

As far as I know the only difference between those 2 is the 1602 is a still air and the 1588 is a forced air. Couldn't you just put a computer fan in it?
 
I'm too lazy to look it up but I believe the 1602 is a wafer thermostat and is also not a preset temp. Having 2 (a 1588 and a 1590) I would say it is DEFINATELY worth the money. I can go away for a whole weekend and know that my bator is going to be at the same temp as when I left it. With the wafers I was afraid to go to the store for more than an hour.
In fact I did go away for 5 days with eggs in the bator ready to hatch and they were ALL hatched when I got home

They hatched the day before I got home so they were only in there for less than 24hrs....

I didn't really have the money either but so glad I went ahead and bought it (also got the turner)
I know you said you were only going to set 12 eggs, but once you've done it, you will be addicted and will be setting many many more. So In my opinion, You should go for it!!!!!

Ah, well... Southernbelle. My broodies are so popular with the other chickens that I am having trouble actually getting their eggs to hatch safely. It seems that when the other chickens see a silkie on a nest that is the international sign for "Lay Here". Fifi has been pilfering eggs from the others for a couple of weeks and shoving the good eggs out the back to sit on the mutt eggs. I finally made her an isolation pen (much to her everlasting disgust), but now Shorty is broody.
Of the 8 I put under Fifi, one got stepped on by an interloping hen and at least two are unlikely to hatch as she had shoved them out the back and they were stone cold. Not terribly good odds. I'm about to order a dozen from Cree Farms and really want to give them the best chance possible. They are expensive! So I'm thinking to give Shorty 6 or so and put the other six in an incubator. Then I'll slip all the chicks that actually hatch back up under Shorty. Stealth hatching! HeHe.

The new littlest incubators are only 5 weeks old and are no help at all. They just made the big move outside yesterday. The playpen is a huge hit and they are having a blast testing their little wings!

All of that to say... I think I'm going to take the plunge and buy an incubator. I just don't want to spend a fortune on it. My chicken addiction is already well out of control.

You won't regret it and I can guarantee you that if you decided you didn't want it anymore you could sell it on here in about 5 minutes

Yeah, Poulets, I have spent all afternoon reading your consolidation thread. It's a great resource and if it's not stickied, it should be.

Sadly, I just want someone to say "Go buy this one. It is worth every penny and you will regret it the rest of your life if you don't spend the money. In fact, it is so phenomenal that you should buy two."

Instead I have to consolidate the research and make my own mind up. Argg! I'm having to rationalize spending an extra $100 on an incubator when quite frankly I don't really need one (I just want one) and $100 could be well spent elsewhere.

When i was looking to buy another incubator it was between the 1588 and the brinsea octogon 20 eco (http://www.brinsea.com/products/octagon20eco.htm). I wanted one with the preset temp so that I didnt have to mess around with trying to adjust the bator. I went with the brinsea because you dont have to open the entire bator to hand turn the eggs, you just turn the incubator itself. It holds temperature like a rock also.
You also should take into consideration if you buy the 1588 new online it'll come with a warranty.
