Does anyone know what causes the yolks to be so soft that they break as they're coming out of the shell? They are still bright orange and the shells seem hard like normal...

Someone else asked that recently but I can't find the thread or remember the answer. SEEMS like the hen needed more protein but not sure. Tell us age, breed, and details of what they eat. Is it happening with all your eggs or just a few?

I have more than forty hens of mixed breeds. They are all about one year old now. The problem is not happening with all of them but it is getting more common. They are pasture raised on our farm so their diet is as varied as it could be. We also feed them an organic layer pellet, kitchen scraps, and some sour milk from the cow when we have extra. This probably isn't very helpful. We have two roosters that have been very busy and i was wondering if fertilization could be part of this problem.

No, fertilization should not affect them. Something is missing in their diet, and I still suspect protein, but just can't be sure I m remembering that correctly. Chickens will eat a lot of grass but not get much protein from it. What is the protein % of the pellets? Do you ever cook the eggs and feed them back to the chickens? Maybe they just aren't finding enough bugs.

I keep hoping someone smarter than me will come along....

No one smarter came...
