When I went to feed the chicks this morning, I noticed Nana in the corner of her coop not really doing anything, She was looking around wanting the eat, but wouldn't make an effort to move. When I got hold of her, I realized something was not right with her right leg. It fell limp at the side of my hand and turned completely around where the hock was pointing outwards. I cringed.
Inside we went immediately. I noticed fresh blood on my hands. Obviously it had just happened. I got my fiance' to help me inspect her and we realized that her leg had broke (not dislocated) at the back of her thigh above her hock and between her hip joint. The bone had protruded through the skin a little and the wound was bleeding freely. I pressed a paper towel against it to stop the bleeding and help it clot.
I might add that Nana is a spoiled little thing. Hatched March 25th this year. She peeped curiously the entire time and didn't seem to be in pain. And didn't complain much at all.
I tried not to touch or mingle with her leg TOO much. Her spirits were high and she ate and drink very very well when we offered her food and water, so I attempted an avian leg splint. Using paper towels, bandaids, medical tape, and two pieces of wood from a clothes-pin, I applied the splint to her leg along with a paper-towel gauze to her wound. Of course we tried to cut the feathers from around her thigh so they wouldn't get in the way or possibly cause more bleeding.
Overall, the splint seems to be a success. It starts at her the very top of her thigh and wraps down to her foot and has stayed firmly in place even when she walks on it. Let me know what you think when I post the pics. I'm charging the camera right now so I can take photos of her in her little pad I made for her. She's still eating and drinking and is eager to get up and walk, but I'm TRYING to restrict her movement for now . . .
