When I went to feed the chicks this morning, I noticed Nana in the corner of her coop not really doing anything, She was looking around wanting the eat, but wouldn't make an effort to move. When I got hold of her, I realized something was not right with her right leg. It fell limp at the side of my hand and turned completely around where the hock was pointing outwards. I cringed.

Inside we went immediately. I noticed fresh blood on my hands. Obviously it had just happened. I got my fiance' to help me inspect her and we realized that her leg had broke (not dislocated) at the back of her thigh above her hock and between her hip joint. The bone had protruded through the skin a little and the wound was bleeding freely. I pressed a paper towel against it to stop the bleeding and help it clot.

I might add that Nana is a spoiled little thing. Hatched March 25th this year. She peeped curiously the entire time and didn't seem to be in pain. And didn't complain much at all.

I tried not to touch or mingle with her leg TOO much. Her spirits were high and she ate and drink very very well when we offered her food and water, so I attempted an avian leg splint. Using paper towels, bandaids, medical tape, and two pieces of wood from a clothes-pin, I applied the splint to her leg along with a paper-towel gauze to her wound. Of course we tried to cut the feathers from around her thigh so they wouldn't get in the way or possibly cause more bleeding.

Overall, the splint seems to be a success. It starts at her the very top of her thigh and wraps down to her foot and has stayed firmly in place even when she walks on it. Let me know what you think when I post the pics. I'm charging the camera right now so I can take photos of her in her little pad I made for her. She's still eating and drinking and is eager to get up and walk, but I'm TRYING to restrict her movement for now . . .

good luck with the little one i hope she makes it! did you clean the wound? an open fracture is seriously prone to infection. dont use peroxide, betadine mixed 50/50 with sterile water would be good to clean with. i would keep her out of the dirt for a while also, at least untill it heals well. the sticky wrap stuff for bandaging would also work better than gauze, it tends to slip less and is harder for them to pick off... dont forget the antibiotics also cause shes gonna need them!

OK I had to wake her up to get these pics lol but here she is. I posted the pics on my myspace so here are the links. i couldn't figure out how to put pics up to where they'd just display. I hate having to follow links.

you could just click one and then click next on the page to see the rest. I just listed them all for reference.

We went ahead and made the splint long so it wouldn;t bother the rest of her leg. Since she couldn't control movement in it at all, I figured it would be best to wrap the whole leg to keep from her causing it more damage. She isn't bothering the splint or pecking at it. She's being very well behaved ^_^

She;s doing fine - she's a lot more peppy now than she was yesterday. She's actually walking a lot and putting her weight on the splint, but I don't know how to wrap her foot . . . so far her foots is doing fine. It's not loosing blood or anything which is a good sign.

I'm just scared to take off the splint now to change her dressing. She does have a good sized wound on the back of her thigh from where the bone stuck through.

Mrs. Glassman :

It looks like you are doing a good job of taking care of her. She's a lucky bird to have you!

Did you ever figure out what happened to her leg?

I hope she gets well soon!

Yeah, make sure that none of the other chicks can get hurt like she did! Hoping the best!

We had them all in tall pens up off of the ground to keep them from getting infected with Cocci since the bacteria is INSANE in the ground in our yard. We usually only let chickens on the ground after they are 6 months old, as even with medicated water, they always stay sick. Babies on the ground always get sick and their growth is almost always stunted from the cocci. They were hatched Jan 25th, so we took a chance and went ahead and put them in a large ground pen. The tall pens they were in weren't made very well. My guess is that she got her leg stuck somewhere higher in the wire where the larger holes are and she just got out before i found her.
