About a week ago I noticed my Cayuga X Muscovy duck had been missing, and all of my birds free roam. Its normal here to have a bird go missing every once in awhile, well, Friday I get home and I was heading out to the barn to start with my daily chores, and I look and see right in front of the flower bed is a great big pile of black iridescent feathers. I follow them out about 50 ft, and laying by the one fence post is a black wing. I looked, and figured it was my Cayuga X Muscovys wing, but I started back to the barn and was stopped when I looked down and found a black webbed foot. I knew then it was my Cayuga, because the Cayuga Muscovy had orange feet.
I immediately started crying, because my Cayuga was one of my favorites. I started looking and making sure I had all my other birds, but I noticed my male Indian Runner was missing, and so was my buff polish hen. So 3 went missing in 1 night. Well I talked with one of my friends, and we figured it was a raccoon, since foxes take their prey with them and raccoons usually eat them on the spot. Well, on Friday night at about 10:30, my dad looked out the sliding glass door with the flash light and lit up a big 'ole red fox in my miniature horse pasture. He took off out the door with his shot gun, and chased the bugger down over the hill into the woods, sadly he couldnt get a shot.

Yesterday I ended up going to a picnic, and afterwards stopping by where I get a lot of my birds from. I talked to the guy that I buy my birds from and told him about what happened. I ended up coming home with 1 male cayuga duckling, 1 male pekin duckling, 1 female crested pekin duckling, 1 female fawn and white indian runner duckling, 1 female swedish duckling, and 1 adult male east indie duck that he gave to me for free because im a "preferred" customer.

I also ended up buying a black spanish poult whos name is Jose.

Well, every night now I've been closing up the chicken coop and putting my ducks in the barn, and last night at about 11, my dad looks out the sliding glass door and has his flashlight, and this time the same fox is at the chicken coop. Once again my dad took off out the door, and this time he was prepared and had his 22, but sadly the fox knew something was up and took off over the hill.

Needless to say, I'm sure the fox will be back tonight, and this time, hopefully he won't be as lucky.

Edited to update title.

at least you know what is getting your birds. I have lost two in the last week through the fence, and it is during the day. My broilers lay along the fence in the run and something comes along the other side and grabs them through the fence, eats the head, legs and wings can't eat the body cause it can't get it through the fence. I have my motion cam out there to try and get some pics, last year it was a fox I assume it is the fox again.

I took pictures.

First let's start off with one of the first killings, my cayuga.
Here is the exact spot where I found his wings and legs, and my dad found his headless torso.

This next picture shows the closeness the fox came to kill my cayuga.
He came right up to the house!

Here is a picture of my chicken coop, you can see the largeness of it and the latticework around the bottom. I had to pull the lattice off the bottom and actually crawl under it to retrieve the chicken bodies!

Here are 2 of the access hole the fox used to get under.

Here is a picture I actually crawled under the coop to take. As you can see the chickens like to get under here, and if you look way in the back you can see loads of weathers and my buff laced polishes wings.

Here is the headless wingless polish's torso.

And the other side, where you can see the fox worked on and pulled out all the organs.

And then my RIR rooster, who was running around quite lively during the morning and day of Saturday, and now as you can see, is no longer.

And here is where the fox feasted, and left no innards.

So as you can see, it has not been a great past week here.

Trust me, I've considered it because I have 2 brand new steel traps for trapping season... but I can't set them anywhere near the house because we have cats that roam around and tend to get into everything.

take and put up a red flood light, no white light they can see in white light.
red you can see but they can not.
When we had a fox problem years ago we put up a red flood light and were able to stop the theiving little brats.

Good Lord, I am so sorry!

I'm new here but I own a small flock of eight Buff hens myself and if I ever lost mine as you did yours, I'd be hysterical.

I'm sorry, but I'd have to do away with that freakin' Fox.
