Yesterday my friends brought their dogs over. I have a trio of 10 week old pullets that hang out together and when I went to put them up I couldnt find them. I figured they had gone into the briers and would see the dogs and not come in the fence.
I was wrong

My GSD, Rudi, was inside while her two boxers were out using the potty. Rudi started freaking out at the back glass door. My friend and I jumped up to see what was going on and her dogs had one of my pullets in their mouth tossing it around!

We ran outside and chased the one dog forever trying to get it to drop the chicken and when it finally did there was a bone popping out. We originally thought that it was coming from the neck and it was still breathing so I told her SHE had to finish the poor thing off since it was her doing. She started to ball and I didnt feel the least bit bad. I told her her dog did it and Im not going to be punished by putting my own chicken down.

Well when we got to lookin at it it was its wing bone snapped in half and hanging there. It was sticking out a good inch or more.
Well I figured Im not gonna kill it its still up moving around..

I got the best thing I had to cut it off which was a huge kitchen knife. I had her hold it down and I spread the wing and cut the tendons it was hanging by and then took a pair of scissors and cut back the bone.

Then I took a thick sock cut it in half to slip around the pullets body and soak up the blood and keep stuff out. Then I took a wife beater cut the bottom of it to make shift a wrap and wrapped it all the way around several times.

This all happend around 5 yesterday and the little girl is still alive. She ate this morning but just stands there with her eyes closed. Shes so off balance. When she dozes she falls to one side. Im so sad to see her like this. My friends dogs are to be tied out to the trees in the front yard if they are to come over again.

But anyways...
What are her odds of surviving being a one winged chicken for the rest of her life?
What should I do for her?
Should I leave everything off so it can get some air or keep on with my make poop bandaids?

She will be fine with one wing if she heals properly. I would keep it clean with a betadine solution and not cover it. Keep an I eye out for infection and treat with antibiotics if you suspect an infection. Make sure she keeps eating and drinking for you. You may want to put some vitamins and electrolytes in her water for extra energy. Keep her isolated from the other chickens as they will pick at the wound. Maybe some one else will chime in too with other ideas. Sorry for you and her trauma and good luck, I hope she makes it.

Nearly the same injury happenned to my 3 week old chick last week--wing pulled off. Except for my chick being a bit older the injury looks the same. There were many helpful hints shared. I bought some "red-kote" doused area. Ground up (human) amoxicillan, put some in water and crumbles. I also put on lots of neosporin. All I can say is "Lucky" is still peeping, eating and drinking. Good Luck!

Thanks guys!
The 'bandaid' as been off for a few hours now and it seems to be drying out and scabbing. All she really does is sleep. Shes eaten the feed Ive given her and drank a little bit.

Shes all puffed out..
Is she cold or is it just something they do when they are injured like this?

I want to get her a couple of my sweeter chicks to nuzzle up to her. I feel so bad for her..

I also have one that is minus a wing. We couldn't figure out what happened. As we kept looking, we have finally discovered she is missing the bottom wing but still has the top. She's learned how to balance, still tries to fly but doesn't do too well with that. I've got her isolated still..but think I might be able to start integrating her with the others this weekend -- maybe via a dog crate at first. She wants to be out running around very badly.

Our problem has been gnats from all the rain. I just don't thinkk wounded animals work well in those conditions so put her back in the juvenile brooder I keep in my basement. My son jokes with me saying Izzy may just need to be an indoor chicken .. and how easy it would be to collect her eggs. That won't happen but I do think if I don't get her back outside soon, she won't be able to adjust.

All good advise above Sarah. I too have had a hen that lost a wing to a coon, She was in shock and I found myself creating a gruel and dropper feeding her. I used Corona on the wound (Corona is the best antibiotic ointment I`ve ever used, available in the feed store). The gruel consisted of starter mash, Coloidal Silver ( a natural antibiotic available at health food stores), and a few drops of Red Cell (a vitamin suplement available in the equine section of the feed store). I fed her as much as she would take, morning and night for 2 weeks. The first week she stood in one spot and drooled a clear liquid. The second week, near the end, she started trying to eat on her own. I then put her in a wire pen with a dirt floor so she could scratch and exercize. I also put in a very low roost . All went well and she recovered, layed many eggs and raised several batches of chicks. She even managed to work out a system for getting on a 3 ft high roost. Your pullet should be fine........Pop

Thanks pop.
This girl now is eating on her own so I dont think shes so bad off..
She just is always sleeping

I went and got 2 silkie chicks out of the brooder to sit here with us. They are nuzzled up under the pullet. Everyones fast asleep

I think that has long as she is on a broad-spectrum antibiotic (such as Aureomycin), which are available at feed stores and the wound is kept clean via betadine (or similar) and maybe some neosporin, then she should heal just fine. Of course, she should be kept inside while she's healing, so her wound stays clean. As long as the wound is kept moist around the bone, the skin should heal over fairly quickly. If it is too dry, it'll still heal, but will take longer.

I think Uno is an adorable name!

I think it is more having the other chickens adjust to having her back with them. After being by herself, I think it will also be an adjustment, although a good one, to be back with the others. The last time I tried putting her back with them, she got pecked so badly, I had to bring her back in. She's pretty much only had human company for a month.
