OK, Sevin dust, is it good or not?!

i keep hearing sevin dust is good, seven dust is bad, sevin dust is a must, sevin dust is toxic, powder it on the m, dont put it directly on them, put it in the bedding, dont put it in the bedding it causes toxic dust.....

would somebody clear this up for me.....
 
I can only offer my experiences with it.

WONDERFUL! A must have on any farm, IMO. Use it on the dogs, pig, horses, and chickens. Use it on the garden as well.

Haven't ever had a death, or illness caused by using it.

Again, just going on my experiences having been raised on a farm, and now having my own farm.

It's like with anything though, some will love it, some will hate it.

Research and come to your own conclusions is all I can tell you.

Sevin and Ivomec are two things we always keep here though. Both have been prescribed as treatments by our vet as well. Ivomec prescribed to try to save a dog with severe heartworms, and as preventative for the rest of the gang. Works wonderful in getting rid of worms in the horses, and killing ticks and lice.

Oooopss, sorry... but have to throw in another controversial product.

I use Sevin dust, too. I have to stop using it soon on my poultry because I am expanding into ducks and geese. It can be fatal to waterfowl. I will be sad to stop using it because it has always been very effective on my animals. I have never had a problem with it.
 
It's great stuff, same as what you put on dogs and cats for fleas (check the label)
For ducks etc, and even for all of your other fowl, you can dust them with DE. It's totally non toxic, nothing medicated. I use it on everything. Kills lice, mites etc etc and you can put it in the food and it kills some internal parasites. So safe you could eat it yourself.

DE is Diatomacious Earth. There are several websites with info on it. I buy mine from myfineequine.
 
Sevin dust is extremely effective and it's also a pesticide with unknown
side effects.

Many here use it and love it.

It's a personal decision.

I'm about to declare war on my rat infestation and checmical and nuclear
weapons have not been taken off the table.

I don't use it and avoid pesticides, herbacides, and fungicides but I'm
a tree huggin, liberal, grass smokin, free lovin, liberal hippy who likes
to save whales on the weekends.

We don't use any poisons! Look up the ingredients, it's man made un-natural poisons! If you're into a quick fix and don't care about risk, go for it, but we will not use poisons around us, our animals, our food, or our children. DE is natural and has been proven effective. We have used that for years and it works just as well as my in-laws poisons!
 
I am always careful to use the 5% Sevin Dust, I put it on my chickens to rid them of mites and put it on & around fire ant mounds. It's economical, easy to obtain, and is effective. If food-grade DE had all those qualities, I'd probably use it instead, but it doesn't.

I'm upset now because my local WalMart doesn't carry the 5% in the big 5-lb bags, just in the pricey shaker cans. They only have 5-lb bags of 10%. Is that not recommended for use on & around animals?

I don't like to use pesticides or herbicides either, not in my veg garden, not on my lawn or ornamental gardens. But fire ants are an exception!
 
We use sevin, and it's great. Dust 'em when you first get 'em (unless they're still fluffy chicks) and then again if you think there's mites or any little bugs roaming around. I have never had an issue at all, and we apply directly on the birds' back and spread it around to everywhere else.
