My buff duck is going to hatch out her single egg on the Fourth of July! I have my buff, Wilma, in a seperate pen with her coop she is brooding in. I am planning on keeping her and the duckling in the pen because the duckling could fit through the main fencing into my yard where my dogs are and let's just say I can't let that happen! I was wondering what I should feed them both until the duckling is old enough to eat layer and dog food and be let out into the chicken/duck area...? Should I feed Wilma and her duckling both chick starter, both layer, or a mix? I could also crush dog food to mix in with there main food... I need advice! LOL

Thanks in advance

So layer crumble and chick starter mixed would probally be best? Do you think crushed dog food would be okay for the duckling? Thanks for the help!

One more question... I live in AZ so the summers (now) get very hot! So when the duckling hatches will it need a heat light? It will be with its momma and it doesn't get chilly at all at night.. what are your thoughts? Also, if you look at the pic I posted you might be able to see the wire mesh that cover the coops floor.... is that too harsh for the duckling's feet? If it is, should I put down paper towels and change them out regularly? Thanks for any input as I am new to hatching eggs this way

first off, you do not need a heat lamp. momma will take care of all of that stuff. The wire on the bottom of your set up will be fine for the baby. If it were chicken wire i would say no because his feet could go through it, but its mesh so it should be just fine. Momma duck can eat whatever u feed the baby, BUT, if she can, she will teach it how to forage for its own food. good luck and keep us updated;)

Thanks so much and I will be sure to post pics of the duckling when it hatches! I can hardly contain my excitement!
