More info: I have him in a cardboard box with a light and some water. he now is trying to walk around. is this ok?

and second what you need to do is keep it clean and what i did when this happened was i would gather it all up and put a bandage on it and it hopefully absorbed it

like a band-aid? theres about 1.5 inches hanging out. how should i bandage it to him?

Use a soft fabric like fleece or something like gauze. Vet wrap around gauze is ideal.

This is common with ducks/chicks that get too much help out of their shell, they need to work to use up the yolk sac. I don't know if you helped, but if so be sure to give them plenty of time ( 24 hours ) before helping out too much. I usually pull up the shell after they pip so I know they can get air, just the little piece they popped loose and let them be.

This can also happen from brittle or thin shells that they zip very easily or in big chunks.

Good luck with your little guy, some make it, some don't.

ETA: do not put a band-aid or anything sticky on him, it will make things worse!

i cut a strip off of my shirt (all we have at home) and tried to wrap it around but hes squirming too much and all his squirming (even with my mom trying to hold him still) has made it so that most of the yolk is being held on only by a thread. its so sticky that it sticks to everything and when he trys to pull away he just pulls it apart more. i tried wrapping between the legs and he squirms too much i cant tape it on after wrapping it around several times. if that stuff falls off is it all over?

and I did help him because he had been pecking for almost 3 days with only a bit of progress (its day 34 now)

I found the egg by the creek in my back yard and the mother never came back to lay more. I incubated it with just a desk lamp

Are you sure it is the yolk or is it the membrane off the egg? The membrane could have become to stuck to the "umbilical cord" where the chick is attached inside of the egg, this is supposed to fall off.

The yolk is attached to the baby and should not be coming or falling off, generally if the yolk is not absorbed they are not very active. I personally have only seen a couple with the yolk not absorbed and on these the yolk appeared to be "part" of the belly.

For now keep him in a small area so he can't run around, put him on a towel to help keep him clean, and keep him warm. Food and water is not needed at this point, a small area is best. A photo would be most helpful if you can get one.

the stuff just fell off and he went, got a drink of water then went to sleep. i'll try to post a image of his belly and the thing that fell off. I havnt used the camera cable in years. it does look like part of his stomach the stuff that fell off. its mostly dark colored. i'm looking 4 the camera cable

theres about a cm of a red stuff hanging out of the hole. should he be able to walk by now if he is going to be ok? all he can do is hobble and fall around.
