Yolk hanging out of mallards stomach

i think the reason he hatched in the wrong end was that i didn't know you had to leave the big end slightly elevated and i actually had the small end slightly higher than the big end.

With the desk lamp, i put alot of cups with water around the egg to try to keep humidity good. I also turned the egg every 3 hours (even at night) and sprayed warm water on it. we also bought a thermometer for $1 at wal-mart to keep the temp around 99-100

I wish I had another duckling to keep this one company but our local feed store only sells ducklings in the spring and online hatchery's dont ship ducklings single (we dont have enough space for 3 adult ducks)

His parents are both domesticated mallards that dont have a owner (they just showed up one day and never left the area) i'm hoping this duckling will develop normally and that he may someday be able to join his parents flock (composed of his parents and 2 other domesticated ducks)

he is now much more stable. he can stand real tall for close to 30 seconds now before he falls over. he is also trying to jump out of the box, I think i'm going to need to go buy a new container with a lid or something

Wow, that's amazing!

I think that's so cool and amazing that you were so dedicated to do the turning, and to keep the temp steady, and all of that--I'm impressed!

Yup, you're probably right about the reason he pipped in the wrong end, and that usually does mean you have help--I had one pip in the wrong end too, and he also ended up with the umbilical cord still attached. And I knew I was supposed to have him big end up, but I had written the numbers upside down on his shell, and I think sometimes I got confused and put him in the wrong way--it was complicated by the fact that his egg was almost completely round, so it wasn't obvious which end was which.

It's excellent news that he's stronger. Good luck--I am keeping him in my thoughts and my fingers crossed! You've worked so hard for him, he's a lucky lucky ducky.

I just read that setting eggs small side up can make them develop in the wrong direction.

Is it ok that his poop is a watery green liquid with just some stuff in it? I know from owning parakeets and lovebirds that with them, watery poop is a sign of sickness. Or is it just watery because he hasnt started eating yet but drinks alot of water?

He/she gets excited when i make peeping noises to it and peeps back while staring at me lol it also likes to cuddle with a stuffed penguin doll that I put in the box. i'm thinking of taking him for a quick bath in the sink or a paint tray tomorrow.

Thanks again everyone for all of your help and support if anything else happens that I need help on i'll ask you guys

I had one that pipped upside down and we ended up helping out eventually. She was wobbly for a couple of days but is now just shy of 8 weeks old. She is smaller than the other three ducks that hatched and bobs her head all the time - but other than that seems fine. We say she is our ADD duck, she hatched upside down and still marches to her own beat.

We have a "ADD" lovebird lol

This morning he started eating and hes up to full strength now! he just runs back and forth from the food to the water

My wife and I have to know how the duckling is doing. We are rooting for you. Starting our first batch of eggs today we are searching for all info we can get. Please keep us up to speed on the progress. Seems like a good story you will have to tell years from now!!
