Hi,

Yesterday morning, I hatched my first chick of the batch. It seemed to be doing fine (eating, drinking, pooping, walking, etc.) up until today. I noticed that the chick's eyes remain closed most of the time, even when it walks (stumbles) around the brooder. When the eyes are open, which is rarely, it is usually just one eye that is very slightly open. Almost like a person looking directly at the sun will squint. I've noticed no discharge around either eye and the baby's poop looks fine to me (a little dab of green in a clear-yellow puddle). What could be causing this and is it normal?

Thanks!

Did you try wiping the eyes in a downward motion with a warm wet cotton ball a couple of times a day? That's what I would try.

Some where on here is a website about poo what is normal and what is not. Click back on this site and scroll down to "Chicken Poo" on there you will find the site with the pictures. Hope this helps

I found one day one of my chick's eyes were closed. This may sound cruel, but you can open it yourself. Also, make sure that the other chickens don't peck her (it IS a her right?).

We had two RIR's that had one eye each closed at 2 or 3 days old. We used warm water a few times a day and it cleared up within a few days. Now they are 15 weeks and doing great!!

Good Luck!!

Thank you so much everyone for your answers!! I used a warm, moist cotton ball a couple of times to open it up, and after a couple of times, her eyelid stopped getting stuck.

We've decided to name her (at least I hope it's a her

) Uno because she was the first (and only so far

) of her litter to hatch. I'm hoping to get some pictures up soon!
