This is a Mr. Saddi build (I'm still not allowed to touch powertools). It's a 2X3 with a 1ft wide cubby for birdy shade. They sit on 2 braces above a shelf with paper for waste removial, the idea is to be able to add to the shelving cage system as needed.

Next I'll take some photos of the shelving system.

it's just over 6 sqft, so the recommendation is 6, but I suspect I'll have 8 or so. The idea is to make 8 uniform cages, and a large bookshelf they slide in/out of. That way I can pick up a cage, and move it out to work with each breeding/grow out pen, rather than a locked in system. This is the top left cage, and has a top opening, the ones under will have side doors, but since I'm short with small arms, opening the top is easier for me (wings are clipped). During our current nice weather, each cage can be slid off and taken outside for the birds to get fresh air and a change in enviroment.

Very cool! I'm looking forward to this because well I do have a few cages But I want a different system similar to what you're doing. Well I have about 25 hens (just started laying wooo hooooo!)lol, and I just separated the males(5) and I have about 40 2weekolds. And It's a real pain having to duck down to feed them and water them. Well I live in vegas so might know why I feed them 2 times a day and water 3 or 4 times a day. I really do care for my birds so thats why I plan to make them a better cage or pen. Thanks for the pics hope you post some on the shelving system. Very helpfull! Thanks!

With a top opening door ( solid and wire) for this type of system , one will have quite a few brocken eggs.

When one tries to move/tilt the heavy wood cage ( owner says she is short with small arms and hands) with top opening wood and wire doors from the tiered bank of cages to clean, feed/water, or just to take outside, the wood covered part ( before any egg could be seen) has a wood floor... so egg go roll - roll - smash. Then too similar situation on the wire part. Much better idea to have side opening doors where one can just reach in and remove the eggs, feed , water or even the birds without having to move any cage. One should also consider a way to shut the door going from the wire section to the wood enclosed section for easier handling of the birds as they will try to escape through the inside doorway from wire to wood section., or vice versa. Easier on the birds too as quail tend to jump straight up before they take flight when disturbed or frightened... how fast can one close the top door before bird gets squished in that process.

I'm very interested in seeing your shelving system. I've been thinking about building something similar to this. Looks great.

Yep I'm short, but not stupid, jeez. Moving is for cleaning and sorting, I'm able to take out eggs without moving the entire cage. It is somewhat of a trade off in choosing a top opening, but in this case being able to lift out birds from above, is less stressful on them then having to side catch them, when reaching thru the cage is an issue, enen if the entire side opened, I'd still have to put in my entire arm & shoulder to reach in.
