Ok, I'm pretty confused at this point. I have read both here and elsewhere that chickens can eat meat and even hard boiled eggs. Then my DM flipped out when she herd that I tried this... saying that I'm setting them up for egg eating and cannibalism.

I went back online to do more research with a more open mind, and I've found sites that say don't feed them meat.

To be clear, my chickens, who are being raised to be layers, eat the appropriate chicken feed from the feed store not pure meat and eggs... once in a while if I had a little left over food, I'd toss it to them, because I was of the understanding that this was ok, and even good for them.

Is this all a matter of opinion? What do you all think? If I was wrong, I'd love to know, and if this is ok to do, I'd like to find proof so that my mom's mind can be put at ease. Thanks!

Animal sourced protein is part of the chickens natural diet. They are, in essence, omnivores. This means they will eat anything including meat - live or dead. It will not hurt them or turn them into cannibals.

Here is the real deal, all wives tales and lore aside:

With very few exceptions - if you can eat it, so can your chickens.

Dont worry about a few pieces of left over pot roast or hard boiled eggs fed back to them. Nothing bad will happen.

Interestingly, some people out there want their chickens to be 'vegetarians'. They reckon they are, so their chickens should be, too. But, no chicken would make such a choice on its own... that is imposed by the chickeneer.

There are also some worries over certain animals proteins, like those derived from beef, in that they may spread other diseases. But I dont believe that is a serious threat in todays feed business.

Duel purpose breeds like you have do Much better with a meat included diet. They need higher protien than the light layers. So make sure you give them something better than 16%, 20% is best around moulting time and rest of the year you can give less. For me and many others we just do 20% thought there lives.

Chickens on a veggi only diet do ok but not as good as those that have a meat source in their diet. Many here used to feed a veggi only then switched and have seen a major improvement in their chickens. If you go to past threads dealing with this you will read what they say. When hcikens free range they eat alot of bug, worm grubs ect as there meat source. Eggs are great and you can give them the shells also for calcium. Many give leaftovers from dinner. So do not worry those that say what your Mom said are undeucated in chicken raising. Nothing to worry about.
