This spring, I decided that I wanted a Barred Rock. I had RIRs and Leghorns, but I wanted a Barred Rock. On the day they were suppossed to come in, we went off to the CO-OP. Unfortunately, Mt. Healthy had some kind of problem, and the BRs hadn't been shipped.

One day about two weeks later, we went in to get a bag of feed. By then I'd pretty much given up, because the BRs were being delayed again and again. But when we walked in, I heard a familiar "peep, peep, peep!" that can only come from a hundred day old chicks. I rushed over to the spot where the chicks are kept. They were little Barred Rocks. I picked one up and brought it to my mother. She said no.

We got the feed and left. But two days later, we had to go back for straw, and my mom let me get one then.

I brought it home and named it Alexis. When we got home, I realised that we had a problem. My standard chicks were three weeks older and much bigger! I finally decided to put Alexis in the brooder with little Kelly and Amanda, our two bantams. A few weeks after that, we got one more bantam, Peepers. He had a closed eye when we got him. We tried to nurse him, but he died,

So then my mom got me two bantams to replace him. Their names were Peepers and Fuzzy butt. As they got older, Alexis grew larger than the bantams, and I was ready to but her in with the bigger chicks. When I went to check on her, I noticed that her beak had blood on it. Whether it was from beng pecked or cutting herself on the chicken wire, or something else, I didn't know. I brought her back and put her with the bantams. About a month later, the bantams and Alexis were moved outside in their small dog crate. From then on, they got to free range with everyone else during te day. Alexis and the bantams always walked in a line or a group. Alexis was always in front, adn the others were in the back. About that time, we discovered that two of Alexis' bantams, Peepers and Kelly, the two SDW OEGB's, were both roos. Fuzzy and Amanda were girls. Alexis is a great bantam mommy. In the las two weeks or so, Alexis has lost two of her bantams. Amanda went first. In the middle of the night, a creature pulled her out of the cage and ate her. There were just feathers left.

Then we lost another chicken, but it wasn't one of Alexis'. The next one to go was little Peepers. The idiot electrician ran over him and didn't even know it! He left without even realising it!

Now Alexis only has one bantam, Fuzzy. We had to take Kelly away because he's sick. When/if/ he gets better, he'll go back to his mommy. Last night, I brought Alexis two new bantams that had just come out of quarantine. They slept fine with her. When I went to put them out this morning, though, they didn't follow her and Fuzzy out. Then I went to put them with Alexis, and they ran away from her! It's weird. Alexis is a great mommy. I don't understand why they are afraid of her. I'm dead set against them not being her babies. If I just keep putting them in with her every night, will they eventually become part of the group? Alexis doen't seem to midn them, but they are very scared of her. Alexis is a favorite around the house. Fuzzy and Kelly love her, and the roosters (epecially Mr. Barred Rock) love her, too. They let her boss them around. Mr. Barred Rock and Goliath, the BSL rooster, protect her bantams from Mr. Red. Red is a very bad boy. He bites people, attacks ducks, attacks the two bigger roosters, and goes after bantams. Red is usually cool around Alexis' bunch, but sometimes he'll go after them.
Anyway, getting to my point, how can I successfully get my two new bantams to love Alexis and follow her willingly just like Fuzzy and Kelly do, and the others did?

Here are pictures of Alexis, Fuzzy, and Mr. Barred Rock. I'll get some of Kelly later.
