I don't know- I just put in a handfull of the horses' alfalfa cubes and they just ignored them.

Maybe they have all the goodies they can handle this winter with the corn and sunflower seeds and oats to keep them warm and just aren't interested

They do like new hay, though, when we change it. (non-alfalfa)
 
I might try it. Already my yolks are looking paler, probably because they're not getting out to freerange on green goodies.

I was thinking of planting some wheatgrass, but what with holiday madness I haven't gotten around to it.

I threw some pellets in with the chickens and turkeys and they all ignored them, so I soaked some in water and they looked at me like I was giving them medicine!! Wouldn't touch it. Sure would have been great green feed....maybe I should try cooking it in there porridge in the morning, I will let you know if they eat it like that.
I swear these birds eat better than us.
 
I put in a couple of bales of hay a few days ago - one alfalfa mix and one prairie - they pick those bales and have a GOOD old time......
I put them in for warmth - so the entertainment is a bonus!
 
I just got my tray sprouter out yesterday, to start some wheat and alfalfa. I always crave alfalfa sprouts in the winter. I thought I might as well toss some extras in for the girls. I have an over night sprout mix that I use for my parrot. I was thinking of starting some of that, too, and just letting it go an extra couple of days. I planted a pot of wheat for our cats, too. Kitty grass keeps them away from the houseplants.

You don't have to buy seeds especially for sprouting for chickens. Any reasonably fresh, whole feed seed will work, like if you have a bag of wheat available. I think some people on the forum have started trays of wheat grass.

My sprouter looks like this. I just pour a liter of water into the top tray and empty the bottom tray, once a day. Mine is 35 years old! That's a lot of sprouts!
