As you guys know I now have a house chicken (was outdoors before) named Carmilla (after Carmilla Soprano). She is almost 2 yrs old and has a crooked beak. She never got as big as the other girls, weight-wise which I assumed was because of her not being able to eat as much, which is true.
But last night after seeing how she went after the oatmeal and how much more she could eat of it I was wondering if giving her, her crumbles mashed up with water would be better for her.
Anyone have any ideas on this...and would pureed veggies be okay too?

Have always heard that a large deep dish for a crooked beak or cross beak chicken works best for them to get the most feed....

I don't think there would be a problem with giving it to her soft. Just be sure that it does not sit long and spoil. I had a little cross beak d'uccle hen that did fine eating out of a regular hanging feeder outside with the others. I would take her to the vet once a month and have her upper beak trimmed. The only reason I don't still have her is because a opossom got in their pen & killed her.

That is exactly what you should do. I have an EE with crossbeak and discovered that she can maintain herself very well if she gets what I call "chicken pudding". It is just the regular chicken layer pellets with water added to make an oatmeal like consistency. You can add in other goodies too, yogurt, leftovers, etc. The deeper bowl (at least 2 inches) allows them to shovel it in better.

In doing this, I have all the girls hooked on their wet mash. It is easy to fix and they act like they are getting something special!

My cross beak love the dogs food as its easier for her to pick up and eat...I do give her layer pellets that are wet but she prefers can cat food and dry dog food...meets me each morning for her dog food and she trys to eat the other grain and gets some but she will land in your lap for the dry dog food...her name is Beaky and is a EE chicken...we just love the old girl..

I give my debeaked hen deep bowls for layer crumbles. I also make sure the water dish is deep. I give her oatmeal mixed with anything I have, like yogurt, or fruit, and she gobbles that down. I think its good to give her some wet mash, it might help out some weight on.

The last few day I have been feeding her about an 1/8 c crummbles mixed in with some organic no sugar added oatmeal and she has been loving it.
Today since I am off I think I wil try to mix up some pureed veggies and see how she likes that. I just want to make sure she is receiving the proper amt of nutrients she needs.

That is so sad, could you possibly cut off the pointy end of an eye dropper and fill with pureed food and feed by hand to mouth at least until she gets enough to put on some weight?

Its not that she's starving or anything, she's just not as big as them.
She had an appt to go to the vet today but he's super busy with surgeries and can't get to her so I guess she will be going in tomorrow.
Right now she is eating some crumbles with ground timothy hay and ground oatmeal mixed in.
Later tonight I'give her a bit of warm oatmeal again
