I recorded a brief video of my mandarins and call ducks this afternoon, so I thought I would share it here. As you can see, there are two pairs of white call ducks. There is also 2 split-to-white mandarin drakes, 1 regular mandarin hen, and 1 white mandarin hen. I'll eventually be adding a white mandarin drake, another regular hen, and building a new pen exclusively for the mandarins. Feedback welcome.

Thanks for compliment, Giffy. As I'm sure you can tell, my duck set up owes a great deal to your raised duck pen design. Your site is a great resource for those with waterfowl. I particularly enjoy watching your live cam nest box videos. I would actually like your opinion on something considering that you raise mandarins and wood ducks so successfully.

I had originally planned on building a separate aviary for the mandarins with traditional wood box nest boxes. However, after building this raised pen, I've decided that I want a similar raised pen for my mandarins if possible. My idea is to modify the house into two stories. The lower story will be a communal area where feed is offered.... similar to the house in the pen now. However, there will also be an upper story that will be divided into four separate nest box areas. Each nest box compartment would be one foot wide and one and half foot tall. Mandarin sized entryways would provide access to the nest boxes. And these doorways would be near the roof of the house.

The entry holes to the nest boxes would only be about 3 feet above the pen floor. However, the nests would be over 5 feet from the ground. I've considered dropping the floor of the pen another foot, but I don't think I could go any lower than that. I love the design of this pen, and hope to use it for the mandarins. I just don't want to deter them from setting and raising young this spring. They seem well adjusted and secure in the pen they share with the call ducks now. They don't panic when I am around and go about their business as I stand there or work around the pen (as you can see from the video). I think being with call ducks has really helped them adjust to the pen and me. I believe they will accept the nest boxes, but I don't have the experience with the Aix birds that you have. So, what do you think? Do you think the mandarins will accept these nest boxes in this type of set up?

Oh, and incidentally, do you know of anyone that has a spare white mandarin drake they are willing to sell?
