We have had zero trouble with predators *knock on wood*.
Once the neighbor's bassett hound starting sniffing around the place, but not around my chickens. I put Charlie Girl on a leash and her and I chased that hound all the way back home. Memorable experience for a short legged hound, I'm sure.
I just let Jax, our german shepherd, out to play for awhile and almost immediately he started barking and carrying on like I've never heard him do before. When I looked out the living room window I saw Jax trying to clear the 5 ft. high gate so I hurried out.
Two dogs - one a small terrier, another a huge mastiff looking thing, easily twice Jax's size - were just on the other side of the pump house from where my chickens are right now. I would have never known they were there had Jax not alerted me.
Between Jax's threatening to come over the fence at them and my hollering the two dogs decided to head elsewhere.
They were both wearing collars, but I didn't recognize them from around here. Next time they show up, if there is a next time, they will be going home with a load of birdshot in their behinds to send their owner a message. They would have this time, but right off hand I didn't know where DH put the birdshot shells for my new shotgun.
YAH Jax! He just earned himself a steak from Mama.
